Could you eat whatever the heck you wanted as a young athlete and now when you try to eat foods you once ate daily such as dairy and wheat you suddenly feel terrible? It is certainly possible that candida overgrowth is to blame.
Yeast overgrowth has the ability to increase intestinal permeability, thereby promoting sensitization. Remember, the vast majority of our immune system resides in the gut. When our gut lining is no longer as strong as it once was after yeast started to chew away at it so to speak, our body may start to attack food, scents, and chemicals that were once safe.
In fact, researchers have discovered a potential link to yeast overgrowth and the triggering of Celiac disease. Certain strains of candida are believed to contain a protein similar to gluten known as gliadin. The body then starts to form antibodies in order to attack gliadin. The belief is that this can trigger neuropsychiatric symptoms , similar to that of gluten intolerance and possibly even Celiac disease.
Systemic candidiasis has also been found to correlate with other autoimmune conditions such as dermatitis, peptic ulcers, esophagitis, arthritis and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis.
Can Essential Oils Help On A Candida Diet
Dietary changes are not the only shift youll make during this time. Foods to Avoid on Candida Diet Cleanse:
- Fruits all sweet fruits and berries, including dried, fresh and canned + fruit juices.
- Starchy vegetables potatoes, beet, yams, sweet potato, corn, peas, parsnips, carrots.
- Refined grains and corn any products made of white flours and white rice as well as corn.
- GMO soy products. Non-GMO, unsweetened soy products are fine. Prefer them fermented, i.e. natto, tempeh, miso.
- Some nuts cashews, peanuts and Pistachios as they may contain mould.
- Alcohol any beverages containing alcohol.
- Sugars all syrups and artificial sweeteners, except stevia and xylitol.
- Additives and preservatives citric acid, anything you dont know.
- Some beverages coffee, black tea, any drinks that contains sugars, i.e. any drinks other than plain water, herbal tea or chicory.
- Condiments read the labels really carefully and look for sugars or any other additives that you dont know. As a rule, its not possible to find a suitable condiment from a store when on Candida Diet. You can check from organic stores for natural products or make your own.
- Vinegar all vinegars except apple cider vinegar.
- Yeast brewers, bakers and even nutritional yeast.

What Are The Symptoms Of Food Intolerance
To name a few, symptoms of food intolerance or sensitivity may include:
- a headache
- digestive issues
If your immune system and gut lining are poor or you have SIBO or leaky gut, you may need to start testing which foods are giving you problems. At least until your gut is HEALED or your body seems to react fine with it. This is where the trial and error comes into play.
I do not recommend eliminating ALL common food sensitives at once thats my personal opinion. Because if you do, then once you start adding foods back into your diet, it can be difficult to tell which food really caused the intolerance in the first place.
TIP: Try taking out one or two foods at a time, then adding them back after a couple of weeks. Take notes on how you feel each day, what youre eating, and so on.
Gluten and dairy are BIG food sensitivities/allergies. Research has found that many who cannot digest the protein in gluten also have difficulties digesting lactose/casein . But then again, it just depends on the person, their gut health, their ethnicity, etc. So many factors here yall!
For instance, when I first started a gluten free diet , I also went off dairy for 9 months. After I knew my gut health was in better shape, I started adding in more low lactose hard cheeses, creams, or cultured dairy . I found I was able to tolerate them just fine. Wine and cheese, please! Haha.
Which is why I think having a Dairy-Free and Gluten-Free meal plan comes in handy.

As mentioned earlier, the free meal is meant to help you physiologically.
It is very important that you do not go overboard in an attempt to take advantage of the opportunity.
If you decide to eat as much as you can, you are defeating the purpose of what you are trying to accomplish. Be sensible in your portions and enjoy a favorite dish.

How Does The Candida Diet Work
The Candida Diet is essentially a low-carbohydrate, low-sugar, anti-inflammatory diet that proponents claim can help promote good gut health and eliminate the sugars that potentially feed Candida. The diet is only intended to be followed temporarily and it is advised to reintroduce foods slowly and gradually once the diet is finished. Although the Candida Diet has been around for decades, the research on it is very sparse and there are no definitive findings to confirm the diet’s effectiveness. The diet itself should not be used as a substitute for a consultation with a physician or qualified healthcare professional.
Proponents of the diet claim that Candida thrives on sugar, and although research is limited on this, findings from a 2017 study suggest that higher glucose concentrations may indeed promote Candida growth. The Candida diet also restricts gluten because of thoughts that it may damage the intestinal lining, but there is no current evidence to support this for individuals who do not have celiac disease.
Dairy products are also excluded from the diet due to an unproven theory that the sugar found in dairy products can potentially increase acidity in the mouth and stimulate Candida overgrowth. And despite lack of evidence, foods with high mold content, preservatives, pesticides, or artificial ingredients are also restricted on the Candida Diet.

A meal of grilled meat such as steak or pork chops, a baked potato and steamed vegetables is a well-balanced dinner that doesn’t contain any yeast. Fresh chicken and seafood are also good options, note the authors of “The Candida Directory.” Seafood, such as salmon, might be a particularly wise choice because it contains omega-3 fatty acids, fats that might be useful in treating an overgrowth of yeast, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
