The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommends using a protein drink that contains whey protein isolate. Your body will absorb this type of protein source the best. However egg white, casein, milk and soy are also highly absorbable sources of protein. Look at the ingredient list of your protein supplement and make sure one of these sources of protein are listed. I suggest your protein supplement has at least 20 g protein per 8 oz.

Its also important to minimize the fat and sugars in your protein meal replacement as well. My suggestion is to choose a protein supplement that has less than 5 g of sugar and less than 3 g of fat.

Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery. Recovery from restrictive weight loss surgery like the intragastric balloon usually takes at least 1 week, and with a gastric bypass, it is often up to 4 weeks

    Reason #: Clean Stomach

    I have a story that will explain reason #6 very well.

    Back in 2009 when I was a chief resident I did a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with one of my mentors. We did the case normally and the patient had absolutely no issues but a lot of things could have gone wrong for the patient just because he didnt follow the diet.

    During his surgery, we notice that the patients stomach was larger and heavier than normal but we divided the stomach without issues. At the end of the procedure, we did a routine endoscopy to evaluate the sleeve and to check for leaks. An endoscopy is basically putting a camera through your mouth down to the stomach so we can see the stomach from the inside.

    To our surprise, we found pieces of chicken between the staple lines.

    Are you kidding me? The patient put his own life at risk for a piece of chicken right before surgery. Again nothing happened to the patient but the learning point here is dont do it.

    Its not worth it.

    Apparently this patient was a sleepwalker and the night before the surgery he went to the fridge and eat some leftover Chinese food with chicken broccoli.

    What Can I Have During The Pre Bariatric Surgery Diet

    Most surgery centers require patients to only drink low calorie, sugar and caffeine free beverages in conjunction with an approved protein supplement.

    This usually includes the following:

    • Water
    • Flavored waters like Crystal Light or Propel
    • Miso broth
    • Broth
    • Approved protein supplement

    During this pre-op liquid diet period I typically suggest to aim for 64 oz fluid in addition to the protein supplements. Make sure at least half of your fluids are coming from pure water. I encourage my clients to focus on water, broth, fruit infused waters and herbal teas during this stage and less on products that include artificial sweeteners.

    How Many Protein Supplements Should I Drink

    The amount of protein drinks you consume each day will depend on two things:

  • The type of protein supplement

  • Your personal protein goals

  • Each protein drink contains different levels of protein. As stated before, I suggest choosing a protein drink with at least 20 g of protein per 8 oz. If you choose a protein drink that contains less protein then you will have to drink more protein supplements to meet your protein goals.

    Your individual protein goals will be determined by your dietitian. Most surgery centers recommend consuming 60-100 g protein a day. The exact amount varies based on your current weight, height, gender and how active you are. Your dietitian will help you figure this out. But aiming for 70-90 g protein a day tends to be a good bet.

    Physical Activity And Exercise

    Its time to start exercising. Actually, you should have started on stage 2. Walking, running, biking, weight lifting, aerobics, canoeing, badminton, hiking, and dancing in your bedroom like a crazy person can all be added to your weekly routine. Ensure that you are getting at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 to 7 days a week. It doesnt matter how you do it, just do it.

    Note: Do not lift more than 10 pounds for at least 6 weeks after surgery. This can put undue pressure on your internal stitches and result in a hernia.

    If you work out a lot, you will need a higher concentration of protein in your diet. Consult with your doctor and/or dietitian to see how many grams of protein you should be getting on a daily basis.

    Patients with kidney and/or liver disease should be careful how much protein they intake as this can be detrimental to their condition. If you are on dialysis or have liver cirrhosis please consult with your provider before starting the Pre Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet.

    Many patients, especially female patients think that in order to lose weight the need to spend countless hours on a treadmill. Cardio is definitely important but remember to alternate your workout. Lift weights several times a week to preserve and to gain muscle mass.

    Work out the big muscle groups like the hamstrings and the back muscles. Use muscle confusion to your advantage by alternating between cardio and weight training.
