Natural Antifungals Can Help You Beat Candida
While its tempting to believe that prescription medication is the quick fix for Candida overgrowth, this is rarely the case. Prescription medications may cause the yeast or fungi to retreat for a time, but they are quick to adapt. They also come with nasty side-effects.
Natural antifungals are quite literally the natural solution to yeast overgrowth. They cause fewer side effects and your infection is less likely to develop a resistance to their antifungal properties. Even better, theyre available in their whole form as food or herbs: forms that your body recognizes and can break down easily.
What Foods Are Included
The no-bread, no-dairy, no-meat and no-sugar diet doesn’t have beef, pork, cheese, yogurt and milk. It also excludes sugary beverages and foods such as soda, juice drinks, pies, cakes, cookies, donuts and pastries. A host of foods that contain added white sugar, brown sugar and high-fructose corn syrup are also taboo.
When you remove these foods from the diet, what’s left to eat? The main foods remaining are fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, all of which are nutrition-dense and comprise a vegan diet.
The inclusion of some additional foods would make it one of the vegetarian eating plans. Eating eggs would make it an ovo-vegetarian diet, and eating fish would make it a pesco-vegetarian eating plan. Adding chicken or turkey would make it a pollo-vegetarian diet.
A no-bread diet may be either healthy or unhealthy, depending on what other choices from the grains food group are included or excluded. If the no-bread diet also involves eliminating white pasta, white rice and crackers made of white flour, it would pose a health advantage. Harvard Health Publishing says such foods are highly processed and nutrient-depleted and that they cause sugar spikes that increase hunger and lead to overeating.
Conversely, adding whole grains to the diet promotes weight loss and wellness because they’re rich in fiber and other nutrients. These foods include brown rice, millet, barley, bulgur, oats and bread made of 100 percent whole-wheat flour or 100 percent whole-grain flour.

Why I Was So Reluctant To Start With Vegan Candida Diet
I hadnt done much research by then, but I knew that all fruits, especially dried fruits would be off the list. And there I was having fruit smoothies for first breakfast, muffins that were sweetened with bananas and dried fruits, snacking on fruits, and of course banana ice-creams as after dinner dessert. Not thinking about it too deeply, it felt like everything would have been taken away from me. It all just seamed too overwhelming and too much to deal with.
However, then I thought that this was exactly what Id felt when I changed my diet to whole food plant-based in 2012. Also back then the change seemed crazy and overwhelming. However, I did it nevertheless because my health was more important than any short-term inconvenience.
The key is to concentrate on what you CAN eat rather than wasting your time on thinking about things youd miss. Overcrowd your menu!
The Definition Of Candida

What Are The Main Symptoms Of A Candida Infection
If you have a yeast infection, you may notice itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva, burning while you pee or during sex, redness in the area, or a cottage cheeselike discharge, according to the Mayo Clinic. Oral thrush, which can occur in adults and kids, appears like a white coating on your tongue or cheeks, as well as redness and soreness in your mouth. An invasive candidiasis can cause a fever or chills, and it can be life-threatening.
Theres another category, which may be referred to as candida overgrowth, and some healthcare practitioners say that it may be responsible for more chronic and seemingly unrelated problems. Symptoms of candidiasis can be widespread, from bloating and distention to bowel irregularities, chronic fatigue, cystic acne and other skin rashes, and brain fog, says Miller.

Restoring Your Gut Health With The Anti
Did you know that there are more than 40 trillion living microorganisms inside your body? Its a staggering number, especially when you realize that a typical human is made up of only around 30 trillion cells. In other words, we are massively outnumbered by our gut bacteria !
Clearly, these bacteria and yeast living inside us have an important role to play. We wouldnt have evolved this way if that wasnt true.
Research over the past few years has exposed exactly how dependent we are on our microscopic friends for things like immunity, digestion, glucose control, and heart health . Theres even evidence that your gut microbiome can affect your mental health too .
It seems obvious that a disruption in the balance of your gut microbiota can have some wide-ranging consequences. When an opportunistic pathogen like Candida albicans starts to overgrow, it can lead to digestive symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, and gas .
Researchers call this a type of gut dysbiosis, which is just another way of describing an imbalanced gut flora. More broadly, Candida symptoms can include fatigue, recurring yeast infections, and weak immunity.
One of the major causes of fungal overgrowth in the gut is a poor diet. By eating foods that are high in added sugars and rich in pro-inflammatory ingredients, you can create the conditions necessary for Candida albicans to thrive .

What Is Candida And Candida Overgrowth
According to the Centers for Disease Control , Candida is a yeast that normally lives on the skin and inside the body , and typically does not cause any problems. If Candida grows out of control and there is an overgrowth, it can cause the fungal infection candidiasis. Although candidiasis can develop in several areas of the body, most people are familiar with candidiasis in the vagina that is commonly referred to as a vaginal yeast infection. The most common species of Candida that causes infections is called Candida albicans.
Are Candida Albicans Really Harmful To Health
Candida is a yeast-like fungus that forms part of the normal microflora of the human mouth, gut and the vagina its something we all have and for most of us, it doesnt cause a problem. There are numerous candida species with Candida albicans being the most common. In a healthy person it causes no problems, however, because it is an opportunistic pathogen, if your immune defences are low or you have a pre-existing health condition, it may become problematic.

How Advocates Say The Candida Diet Works
The candida diet, generally speaking, removes all sources of flour, sugar, and yeast from your diet and encourages lean proteins, nonstarchy vegetables, and healthy fats, as well as several supplements to encourage the process. Doing so staves off yeast overgrowth, says Miller. Its also important to use compounds that support the die-off of yeast and the removal of this yeast and its by-products out of the body, she says.
But its important to note that many experts disagree with the idea that this diet is necessary in the first place. Research in this area is pretty sparse, and even though it often gets blamed for a lot of things, we dont really know what causes candida overgrowth and whether even works, says Abbey Sharp, RD, a blogger and YouTuber at Abbeys Kitchen, who is based in the Toronto area. Currently, no research has been able to definitively support the use of a low-sugar diet to treat candida overgrowth, she adds. Sharp points to a review published in the journal Genetics that she notes showed that certain carbohydrates or sugars may promote yeast growth. But, she says, no evidence has found that yeast is interfering with our gut and that changing diet will make a difference.
Another limitation is that the research that is available is largely in vitro experiments, which cant replace human studies. The way things behave in a test tube does not necessarily translate to how they behave in the human body.

Choose Nuts And Seeds
On a no-sugar, no-flour diet, nuts and seeds make a good snack, providing protein and fiber, the two nutrients most associated with satiety in other words, they help fill you up so you eat less. According to Harvard Health, adding more nuts and seeds to your diet may lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Almost all nuts, seeds and their butters contain less than 10 grams of natural sugar per 100 grams, and they have no flour. The lowest in natural sugar are sesame seeds and paste, black or English walnuts, sunflower seeds and paste, flax seed, hemp seed, pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, almonds, macadamia nuts and pistachios, with less than 5 grams per 100 grams.
When buying nuts, seeds and their butters, make sure you opt for raw or dry roasted varieties without added flavors like honey or barbecue.
Gut And Psychology Syndrome
The Gut and Psychology Syndrome diet is a Candida sugar detox based on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and also introduces foods in stages. Stage 1 is very restrictive and only allows room temperature water, homemade stocks/soups, and ginger tea. So youre basically starving yourself. Awesome.
Moving on to stage two, organic raw egg yolks, meat, vegetable stews and probiotic foods like yogurt get introduced. Sounds umnot so fun. At this point, I havent found any research studies supporting the use of GAPS. And if that doesnt set off enough red flags, just note that the author of this diet believes that vaccines may cause diabetes and celiac disease among other interesting things. OK. Next.

A Final Word On The Candida Diet: Should You Try This Plan
The candida diet is controversial. While advocates say that an overgrowth of Candida albicans may be the common thread behind many health symptoms, some experts caution that the condition and dietary treatment remains unproven. If youre looking to treat a yeast infection, thrush, or other health condition caused by an overgrowth of candida, work with your healthcare team to identify the proper plan of attack.

The latest research shows that gluten triggers the production of zonulin, a pro-inflammatory protein that damages the intestinal wall and causes intestinal permeability .
Intestinal permeability, which you might know as Leaky Gut, has been implicated in auto-immune conditions, food sensitivities, Crohns disease, and IBS .
If you have been suffering from a Candida overgrowth and your gut health has deteriorated, eating gluten is likely to worsen your symptoms.

Is There Any Evidence To Support The Theory Of Candida Overgrowth
Candidiasis is the term given when the candida present in your system starts to become more prevalent in relation to the other organisms that naturally reside there. This can sometimes happen after long-term use of antibiotics, steroids and some birth control pills or during pregnancy, if you are overweight, have an existing bacterial infection, or have a pre-existing health condition such as a compromised immune system, diabetes or psoriasis.
