Ask About Your Medications
You may need to stop taking some of your medications before your procedure. Talk with your doctor about which medications are safe for you to stop taking. We have included some common examples below.
If you take a blood thinner, such as to treat blood clots or to prevent a heart attack or stroke, ask the doctor who prescribes it for you when to stop taking it. Examples are listed in the Common anticoagulants table. There are others, so check with your doctor if youre not sure.
Medications for diabetes
If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, you may need to change the dose. Ask the doctor who prescribes your diabetes medication what you should do the day before and the morning of your procedure. Tell your doctor you will be drinking a sugar-free clear liquid diet the day before your procedure.
If you take metformin or a medication that contains metformin , dont take it the day before or the day of your procedure.
Allowed And Recommended Foods
- Water, coffee, or tea
- Strained fruit juices with no pulp
- Soft drinks/Sports drinks
- Chicken or Beef bouillon/broth, low sodium, fat free

Coffee Enemas To Clear The Colon
Compared to colonics, enemas are done at your home in private. They are inexpensive compared to a more costly visit to your colon hydrotherapist. You can buy kits at any drugs store or online. Here is a great stainless steel kit that I recommend.
Enemas also work by cleansing your colons with water. In some cases, coffee, wheatgrass, herbs, or apple cider vinegar is added for extra cleansing. While colonics target your entire intestine, enemas are targeting your descending colon only. Here is a helpful article on how to do a coffee enema.
If you choose to get a colonic or try an enema yourself, it is important that you take probiotics to support your healthy gut flora. Colonics clean your colon from waste, toxins, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. However, they also clean out good bacteria in the process.
Taking high-quality probiotics and eating a nutrient-dense, gut-supporting diet is important to achieve long-term results. Continue reading for further tips on how to reset your microbiome after a colon cleanse.

What’s The Difference Between A Clear Liquid Diet And A Full Liquid Diet
A full liquid diet includes all liquids and foods that become liquid at body temperature. Shakes, milk, frozen yogurt and creamy soups are allowed, as long as they dont have any chunks or food particles in them. A full liquid diet is prescribed for similar reasons as the clear liquid diet to rest the digestive system after illness or surgery and reintroduce it slowly to normal eating but its a less severe diet for less severe cases. Some people need to start on the clear liquid diet first before progressing to the full liquid diet. Those who are preparing for an imaging test will need to stick to clear liquids to keep their digestive tract clear.
A note from Cleveland Clinic
A clear liquid diet is a brief but important intervention. Its a safety measure that keeps you hydrated before and/or after surgery. It can help your gastrointestinal system heal and help healthcare providers get a better look inside at whats troubling you. It might seem difficult, but most people manage it well for a day or two. While on the clear liquid diet, follow your healthcare providers guidance carefully. Your digestive system will thank you, and may even reward you with rapid relief.
To Cleanse Or Not To Cleanse
Many refer to a colon cleanse as a detox, flushing, or a bowel cleanse. Proponents of cleansing tell us it will improve health, remove toxins, boost energy, and enhance our immune system. They say it will reduce bloating and gas, and can even help with weight loss.
Many health professionals do not consider every type of cleanse to be healthy, and they tell us there is little to no evidence that it actually helps remove toxins from the body.
Never begin a cleanse without first speaking with Digestive Health Services.
Beware of colon cleansing products and note safety warnings on each of them. There are a multitude of unhealthy side effects that individuals may experience with these products. Diarrhea is a significant one. Not only can diarrhea make someone dehydrated, it can also change their electrolyte levels and lead to lightheadedness, leg cramps, or abnormal heart rhythms.
Those with pre-existing bowel conditions like Crohns Disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, or heart disease should avoid colon cleansing. In addition, the loss of healthy gut bacteria can increase any persons risk of infection.
Unless you are about to undergo a medical procedure like a colonoscopy and under a doctors care, never begin a cleanse without first checking with Digestive Health Services. Contact us with questions.

What Else Can You Do To Enhance Colon Health
Watch What You Eat: Your food choices — not what you flush through your colon — may have the greatest impact on colon health, lowering your risk of colon cancer and enhancing your overall health.
High fiber foods:Increasing both soluble and insoluble fiber can help with a wide range of gastrointestinal problems, including constipation, diverticular disease, and colorectal cancer. The typical American consumes about 15 grams a day, but you need closer to 25-30 grams. If there are no gluten issues, add sources of both insoluble fiber, such as cereal and whole grains, and soluble fiber, such as bran, some fruit, some vegetables, and oatmeal.
Drink more water: Drink plenty of fluids, but drink alcohol in moderation.
Avoid: Keep away from tobacco and limit red meat to keep your chances of having colon cancer low.
Get screened: Get screened for colon cancer beginning at age 50, or earlier if your doctor advises.

Considerations For General Nutrition
The clear liquid diet does not adhere to the 20202025 USDA Dietary Guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture it will not meet your nutritional needs. You should advance your diet to full liquids, a puréed or soft diet, or a regular diet as soon as you’re cleared to do so.
If you need to follow the diet for more than a few days, your healthcare provider may recommend adding additional supplements or high-protein gelatin to boost your caloric and nutrient intake.
Master Cleanse Or Lemonade Diet
The Master Cleanse is a system of liquid fasting utilizing lemon for cleansing and maple syrup for nutritional support, both mixed in with a glass of water. There is a large following for this type of fast, many who consistently do a 10-day fast every year. But the Master Cleanse can be utilized for shorter fasts as well, and is considered fairly comfortable to perform.

How To Cleanse Your Colon
You might be tempted to give your bowel a spring clean every now and then, but resisting the urge of extreme cleansing methods could actually be better for you.
To be frank, there is really no reason for you to clean your gut with colon cleanse products. Thats because your body has clever ways of keeping itself clean and free of toxins. Your liver is the main detoxification hub in your body.
Blood flows from the digestive organs and into the liver via the portal vein. At this stage, it carries nutrients, as well as toxins, which are processed, changed, stored, detoxified, and then either passed back into the blood to be used by the body, or into the bowel where theyre removed from the body via your stools. Clever, right?
Because your body has mechanisms in place to rid itself of harmful substances, forking out on an expensive detox colon cleanse probably isnt going to bring you many benefits. Instead, eating the right foods to support your gut microbiome and your wider health is more important.
FACTYour liver is vital for your health because it can convert some toxic substances into harmless ones and make sure others are removed from the body altogether.
Is A Liquid Diet Right For Your Ibd
Experts say some adults with Crohns disease may benefit from a liquid diet. Heres what you should know.
There is no cure for Crohns disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease that leads to inflammation of the digestive tract and painful symptoms like abdominal cramps, severe diarrhea, fatigue, and malnutrition. There are several options to manage Crohns but there is no one-size-fits-all approach for everyone. Such treatments include medication, surgery, and dietary changes.
In children, a treatment known as exclusive enteral nutrition, or EEN, is considered the first line therapy to treat Crohns. It is a short-term treatment program involving a fully liquid diet meant to induce remission. EEN is not typically used to treat adults with Crohns, and more research is needed to determine its effectiveness in this population, says Arielle Leben, a registered dietitian at NYU Langone Healths Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center in New York City.
One potential explanation for this lack of research is poor compliance, she says. Many adults find the EEN formulas unpalatable and decline the alternative of receiving the formula through a temporary nasogastric tube.

What Does The Research Say About Detoxes And Cleanses
There have been only a small number of studies on âdetoxificationâ programs in people. While some have had positive results on weight and fat loss, insulin resistance, and blood pressure, the studies themselves have been of low qualityâwith study design problems, few participants, or lack of peer review .
A 2015 review concluded that there was no compelling research to support the use of âdetoxâ diets for weight management or eliminating toxins from the body. A 2017 review said that juicing and âdetoxâ diets can cause initial weight loss because of low intake of calories but that they tend to lead to weight gain once a person resumes a normal diet. There have been no studies on long-term effects of âdetoxificationâ programs.

What Does Een Involve
EEN uses a liquid formula to provide all of a patients nutritional needs. No other food or drinks besides water are consumed. It is meant to be a short-term therapy, ranging from 4 to 12 weeks, says Stacy Cavagnaro, a registered dietitian for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Medical Home at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
A registered dietitian would calculate the number of cartons of formula you would need to take in each day based on your protein and caloric needs, Cavagnaro says.
The formula can be taken orally or through a feeding tube. After the course of EEN is finished, a patient is weaned to PEN or partial enteral nutrition, where 25 to 50 percent of their caloric needs come from formula, with the rest coming from food, Cavagnaro says. Ultimately patients are weaned to what we consider our Crohns maintenance diet or a Mediterranean diet in the long-term to promote overall health, she explains.
Importance Of Good Bowel Movements
Having good bowel movements is one of the most important elements of your overall health. They move out all waste from all your previous meals within 24 hours. When your body is healthy, good bowel movements happen 1 to 4 times a day ideally early in the morning or shortly after your meals.
Normal stool is the result of a healthy digestive system that breaks down and absorbs your food then gets rid of all toxins and waste. Normal stool is brown, soft, smooth, and snake-like. To determine if your poop is healthy you may look at Briston Scale as shown below .
Abnormal stools may be different in color, shape, texture, and regularity. Constipation is common digestion complain that may happen due to a lack of fiber in your diet, stress, certain medication, colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome , small intestinal bacterial overgrowth , and other health conditions. Diarrhea is another common digestive issue that may happen due to infections, bile acid malabsorption, IBS, and other health issues .
Healthy bowel movements help to:
- Reduce microbial load on your body
- Eliminate destructive endotoxins
- Reduce inflammation throughout your body
- Help to calm your brain and nervous system
- Enhance energy and mental clarity
- Improves skin health and natural glow
- Reduces chronic pain levels.
