Drew Barrymore is the first to admit that her weight loss hasn’t come easy. In fact, she once revealed that she “trained like a mother” to lose 20lbs after welcoming her daughters, Olive, eight, and Frankie, seven.
The E.T. star confessed it is difficult for her to maintain her desired weight and previously shared on Instagram that it “takes me so much work. Diet and exercise and fighting like a lion for it”.
Drew is also a firm believer in exercise and admitted to InStyle back in August 2020 that if she didn’t work out, she’d probably be “the size of a bus”.

“I have to work so hard at not being the size of a bus… And it’s OK. That is just my journey. That is my karma. I don’t know, maybe I was thin and mean in a past life,” she said.
The actress is very open with her fans about her weight struggles and previously said on Instagram: “If I looked decent on anything that I have done since I had my two kids, I have clawed my way there. You can too! However, it is hard to sustain and can take a lot of the joy out of life with food.

Diet: Smoothies To Start The Day
If you were to ask the 39-year-old what she starts her day with each morning, chances are she’ll say a green smoothie.
Speaking to Women’s Health, Dewan said she swears by green smoothiescontaining a mix of spinach, kale, lemon, apple, banana, sometimes pear, a little cod liver oil, and black sesame seeds blended with waterto not only prepare her for her jam packed day, but also to up the health of her skin and hair.
Sometimes she’s switch up her smoothie recipe for a little variety, opting for Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green smoothie as an alternative: “I’ll have a smoothie made with spinach, romaine, lemon, celery, banana, pear, and apple,” she told . “It’s filled with so much fibre, minerals, and vitaminsit’s changed my energy and skin.”
She’ll also add coriander and parsley to her smoothies for extra greens, or spirulina powder as a supplement to her diet. “It is alkalising, it is like superfood for your blood, your oxygen and your cells,” she told Women’s Health. “It’s amazing.”
Workout Tip #: Get Proper Post Workout Nutrition
In general, there are three purposes to what you eat after a workout. You want to:
- Replenish your energy by replacing glycogen
- Reduce muscle breakdown with protein
- Repair any damage and increase protein synthesis
This sounds scientific and difficult, but in reality its pretty simple and natural. When you have proper post-workout nutrition, youll find that you recover faster, have less soreness, make progress faster, and even burn more fat.
Because exercise increases your circulation, and due to other factors, there is something called the window of opportunitywhere your body is more receptive to nutrients that can aid in the recovery and rebuilding process. Thus, the optimum time to get post-workout nutrition is within two hours of exercise, and ideally as soon as possible.
Typically, you need two main things. Carbohydrates to replace the cellular glycogen you burned through and protein/amino acids to aid the rebuilding process. Keep in mind, though, that were talking about workouts that are of medium-to-high intensity and last 30-45 minutes. Shorter or less vigorous workouts dont require special post workout nutrition emphasis. In those cases, just eat as you normally would.

My Power Protein Smoothie
This is a super-filling smoothie that is great after a workout to help replenish amino acids, or as an afternoon snack. I think chia seeds are one of the best foods out there, and I eat them almost daily. They have replaced ground flaxseeds as my daily seed. Chia seeds supply protein, fiber, Omega 3 fats, minerals and long-burning fuel. I dont recommend soy or whey protein powders, but I love brown rice and raw hemp protein powders.
This smoothie supplies 18+ grams of easily assimilated plant protein into your body. If you dont have access to acai packets, which would be in the refrigerated section of your health store, just omit it, and add a bit more vanilla and cinnamon, for a vanilla-flavored drink.

There are four cornerstones. Food is an obvious starting place. Food is tangible. Understand what food does. It’s just as important what you cut ours as what you put in.
If you’re putting dead, decaying food in your body it weighs you down. Meaning I gave up meat and animal products and felt better immediately.
The Second is the Body: What you do besides how you eat. Like sleep and exercise, your skincare products. We are not just what happens up here but we are meant to have an in-body experience when we eat, and we need to know what to eat to feel healthy.
The third cornerstone is Emotional Wellbeing: Bloating and inflammation happen and once upon a time, I might have thought that was because of what I was eating, like dairy. But actually bloating is not passing through, so if you’re holding onto guilt or shame then the intrinsic reaction we have is to ‘hold on.’ Your body secretes stress hormones and it makes you keep from healthy digestion.
The fourth is Spiritual Growth: Spending time connecting to your authentic self. You need to care for your natural self, and take time to cultivate our uniqueness, our connection to ourselves.
If you ignore any one of these cornerstones you obsess about the other ones. So if you have an eating disorder, then you obsess with the food and you ignore the rest of these important aspects of your wellbeing.
You need to create this integration. That is how you start to feel good.
