Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey reveals restrictive diet

Been playing with fasting for some time. I do a 22 hour fast daily , and recently did a 3 day water fast. Biggest thing I notice is how much time slows down. The day feels so much longer when not broken up by breakfast/lunch/dinner. Any one else have this experience? he tweeted.

Meditation is often thought of as calming, relaxing, and a detox of all the noise in the world. Thats not vipassana. Its extremely painful and demanding physical and mental work. I wasnt expecting any of that my first time last year. Even tougher this year as I went deeper.

jack ???

For my birthday this year, I did a 10-day silent vipassana meditation, this time in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar ??. We went into silence on the night of my birthday, the 19th. Heres what I know ??

Billionaire Jack Dorseys 11 Wellness Habits: From No Food All Weekend To Ice Baths

From Eating Just 1 Meal a Day to Ice Baths: Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey ...

The ancient philosophy of Stoicism which teaches to be satisfied with what you have and includes practices like self-denial has become a trend among Silicon Valley elites. But perhaps no one is more devoted than 42-year-old billionaire Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square.

Dorsey tweets about his various Stoic endeavors, for which he is often derided: When he went on a 10-day meditation retreat in Myanmar for his birthday in 2018, he was blasted for being blind to the human rights atrocities occurring there. Hes also been criticized for promoting questionable eating habits, like intermittent fasting.

But Dorsey says he needs to be performant and clear to effectively run two companies. So to maximize his capacity, he constantly evolves his habits, he says on the Ben Greenfield Fitness: Diet, Fat Loss and Performance podcast. Heres what Dorsey says he does.

Potential Drawbacks Of The Omad Diet

First and foremost, depriving yourself of food for 23 hours could mean youre more likely to choose unhealthy food options, lose control and overeat when you have dinner. It would be extremely difficult for dieters to meet their nutritional needs in one large single meal. So, its pretty clear that whatever health benefits or weight loss you get on the one meal a day diet will be temporary and not last long.

Intermittent, whether alternate-day or any other forms of fasting diets, can cause negative side effects. And not eating for 23 hours can come with several risks, including lack of energy, serious hunger, fatigue, shakiness, inability to concentrate, irritability, etc. Dieters following the one meal a day diet may develop binge eating disorder or uncontrollable cravings.

Also, one study published in JAMA reported that intermittent fasting raised levels of LDL cholesterol , which is linked to increased rates of heart disease and stroke. The same study also suggested that following an intermittent fasting diet will not lead to more weight loss than simply reducing the number of calories you eat each day.

Limiting Yourself To One Meal Per Day Could Result In Malnourishment

Dorsey’s dinner of lean protein and vegetables resembles a kind of diet given to obese patients trying to lose 50 pounds or more, according to Dr. Caroline Apovian, who directs the nutrition and weight-management program at Boston Medical Center. Even then, patients are recommended to consume three meals a day.

That might explain why Dorsey had some trouble transitioning to his fasting routine. “The first time I did it, like day three, I felt like I was hallucinating,” Dorsey told Greenfield. “It was a weird state to be in.”

Apovian said the CEO’s body probably wasn’t prepared for a change in its circadian rhythm. “Dorsey’s body initially was saying, ‘Hey, what are you doing? Where’s my meal?'” she told Business Insider.

Although Apovian said our bodies can learn to adjust to new eating practices, she believes an active person such as Dorsey who either walks five miles to work, does a seven-minute workout, or hops on a stationary bike each day could become malnourished by eating so little.

To balance out a diet such as Dorsey’s, Apovian recommends a breakfast of whole grains, steel-cut oats, fresh fruit, and low-fat dairy a few hours after waking up or an hour before exercise.

The best way to care for our bodies, Gaudiani said, is to “nourish ourselves throughout the day.”

Diving Into The Potential Health Benefits Of The Silicon Valley Billionaire’s Very Strange Breakfast

On those days where I actually live up to the healthy routine I keep in the Notes section of my iPhone, I take in a list of liquids that could rival a cocktail menu. The regimen includes a pea protein shake, a cup of beet juice, a greens smoothie with spinach and wheatgrass, and a mug of valerian-infused tea. Each drink has a purpose theyre meant to aid in recovery, offer energy, facilitate digestion and help me get to sleep.

Which is to say, I have a fairly low threshold when it comes to willingness to chug something in the name of wellness. If it works, why not? Its usually a far more efficient way to cash in on nutrition. A couple years ago, JJ Redick explained how he used to labor through a plate piled high with beets each night, washing them down with water until he was bloated and bored, all in pursuit of the vegetables nitrates. Now, he just drinks beet juice.

A thoughtful liquid-based diet can offer some kickass benefits. Its worth your time and money. But if a particular drink is actually going to make it into your rotation, its reputation ideally shouldnt rely on pseudoscience and hearsay. Lately, one such potion has drifted back into the public sphere, as its biggest supporter has had trouble staying out of the news. I speak of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and his infamous salt shakes.

Kind of love this morning routine, thanks #Oneteam

But Is This Realistic Or Even Healthy

While he hasnt confirmed it, its fair to assume that Dorsey has the resources to check in with medical professionals and nutrition experts while maintaining such a strict plan. Having outside eyes creating a single meal that meets your energy, protein, and micronutrient requirements, as well as being tasty for the day, is essential to doing something like this, says Scott Keatley, R.D., who focuses on helping people manage conditions related to nutrition such as diabetes, obesity, and eating disorders.

But most people would fail if they tried to eat this way, he says, and wind up with brittle hair, dull skin, and the loss of lean musclea lack of calories and nutrients can quickly lead to malnutrition. There are also social drawbacks to consider. Its pretty tough to be the only one not eating at social functions, Warren points out.

And, while Dorsey seems okay with having one meal a day, its a slippery slope. It can quickly fall into a diagnosable eating disorder, Keatley says. In fact, his initial interview drew swift criticism because many people, including experts, viewed it as disordered eating.

Bottom line: While experts say less extreme versions of intermittent fasting can have benefits for some people, eating just one meal a day isnt the best move. No, just no, Keatley says.

Fasting Might Seem Like It Improves Mental Acuity But It Can Backfire

Jack Dorsey says he adopted his strict routine of diet, exercise, and ...

Dorsey told Greenfield that since starting his new diet, his ability to concentrate and fall asleep quickly have improved significantly. But Gaudiani said those kinds of results can indicate that someone’s body is going into survival mode because of starvation.

When a person severely limits their food intake, the body will use evolutionary instincts in order to keep itself alive. “When people undercut their need for food with radical under-eating, the body doesn’t care about the reasoning. It is just going react to save your life,” Gaudiani said.

That reaction will include feelings of mental sharpness because the body is trying to determine when and where from it will get its next meal. “Animals who are starved shouldn’t feel playful,” Gaudiani said. “They should feel concerned and focused. They may interpret that initially as productive, but it’s the brain saying, ‘I don’t have enough food.'”

In some cases, mental sharpness can turn into feelings of panic or paranoia because of survival instincts. In the long term, starvation can lead to decreased testosterone levels , fragile bones, poor skin, hair loss, and early signs of aging.

Jack Dorsey Ceo Of Twitter

Jack Dorsey wakes up at 5 every morning. He dedicates the first few hours of his day to “personal care,” which includes a 60-minute meditation, a 6-mile jog, and an ice bath to shock his system into action.

According to the OnDeck study, Dorsey believes his rigorous morning routine gives him the mental confidence to tackle any challenges that come up during the day. And there’s some hard science to back up the theory. Research by Stanford psychologist Kelly McGonigal suggests that forcing ourselves to do uncomfortable things builds up neural pathways associated with mental resilience.

In other words, mental toughness is something we can learn and cultivate. We just need to put in the work and embrace the struggle. And Dorsey is no stranger to either concept. His intense mornings are just a warm-up for an 11-hour workday that doesn’t end until after midnight.

What Is The One Meal A Day Diet Plan Can It Help With Weight Loss

The one meal a day diet is an extreme level of intermittent fasting that aims for a 23:1 fasting ratio, which means youll fast for 23 hours and eat your food and consume all your calories in just one hour. This could be any meal with a 23:1 fast, however, people usually break their OMAD fast at dinner time to burn fat or improve health, then resume fasting until the next evening.

Essentially, in the one meal a day diet, your meal can have a variety of nutrient-dense foods that provide many essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein and fats. You can also have as many as you want during your single meal to feel full and ensure that you get enough calories and nutrients for your age, weight, and activity level. This means you dont count on calories while on the OMAD diet plan.
