What Is Fiber And Why Can It Be Beneficial

Dietary fiber is the portion of plant foods sometimes referred to as roughage. Unlike other carbohydrates, fiber isnt broken down and absorbed by your digestive tract.1 Instead, fiber passes through your system until it reaches your colon, where it is either fermented by bacteria or eliminated in feces, depending on the type.2

Vegetables and other plant foods contain a combination of soluble and insoluble fiber.3 Colonic bacteria ferment soluble fiber, while insoluble fiber passes through untouched, helping bulk up stools and making them easier to pass.

Although its promoted for helping to relieve constipation, fiber has been found to play several other roles in good health, including the following.4

  • Better diabetes control: Soluble fiber can help lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.5
  • Lower LDL cholesterol levels: According to clinical trials, both soluble and insoluble fiber may help modestly reduce LDL cholesterol.6
  • Relief from irritable bowel syndrome: Although insoluble fiber bulks up stool, soluble fiber seems to be more beneficial for irritable bowel syndrome.7
  • Potential weight loss: Fiber may help you feel full and absorb fewer calories from mixed meals.8

The US Food and Nutrition Board recommends a minimum daily fiber intake of 25 grams for women and 38 grams per day for men, based on research connecting higher fiber intake with better health.9

A high fibre diet comes with a higher number of health benefits, starting with your digestive system as its one of the diets that work fast to produce good results. And unlike a low fibre diet, it get things moving more quickly and allow your body to absorb the nutrients it needs.

Harley Street nutritionist Lily Soutter says, On average, most of us within the UK simply arent reaching our daily-recommended fibre intake. Fibre plays a key role with supporting digestive health, reducing weight gain, and keeping our gut lining healthy by feeding our good bacteria. Whats more, fibre can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and even bowel cancer!

But it turns out many of us arent getting enough fibre in our diets, as a study by PubMed showed that on average were only consuming 18g out of our recommended intake of 30g per day.

We all want to live longer, healthier lives and one way to improve overall health is by adopting a low-fat diet abundant in fiber-rich foods. Eating the right foods and limiting consumption of saturated fats, for example, can dramatically lower bad cholesterol, LDL. Naturally produced by the liver, cholesterol is essential to the functioning of our cells, but too much LDL cholesterol can build up on the walls of the arteries and form plaque that can block blood flow to the heart, brain and other organs. High cholesterol is a leading of heart disease and stroke.

Cut The Fat Out Of Eating Out

Many of us have a hard time sticking to a healthy diet because we eat out more than once or twice a week, but eating out can be healthy. With proper diet, most individuals are able to significantly lower their blood cholesterols. To learn more, visit these informative websites and start eating healthier today:

Be Kind To Your Heart: Adopt A Tlc Diet

The TLC diet, recommended by the National Institutes of Health, is low in saturated fats. In fact, the NIH advocates that less than 7 percent of daily calories come from saturated fats and suggests that dietary cholesterol is limited to less than 200 mg per day. In a cholesterol-lowering diet, 25-35 percent or less of the days total calories should come from fat. Also limit sodium intake to less than 2400 mg per day.

So, what foods should you eat and which should you avoid?

Say YES to these low-fat, high-fiber foods:

    • Fruits
    • Whole milk
    • Whole milk dairy products

If you cant eliminate these foods entirely, eat them sparingly and select cheese with a lower fat content, as well as lean cuts of meat or ice milk products.

Eliminating fat can also help you lose weight. Dietary fat contains over twice the calories of protein or carbohydrates.

Be sure to eat three main meals each day, including breakfast, and plan ahead for low-fat snacks in the morning and afternoon. That way youll avoid grabbing for a doughnut or fat laden iced coffee drink when hunger strikes and youll reach for an apple instead.

Another diet that can account for a dramatic drop in blood cholesterol is the Mediterranean Diet. Like the TLC diet, it includes generous amounts of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes as well as red wine and fish, with only occasional small servings of red meat.

    Up Your Exercise Program

A good rule of thumb is to set aside 30 minutes each day for physical activity, such as biking, walking, swimming or aerobics. If you cant squeeze a half hour out of your daily schedule, then consider doing several ten-minute sessions each day and use every opportunity you can to climb stairs, take a brisk walk at lunch, do a series of jumping jacks, or jump rope.

Exercise helps you maintain muscle tissue and burn body fat. It resets your bodys metabolism so that you burn excess calories.

Do something you like and stick with it! Make it part of your daily routine. Exercise can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve fitness and reduce your weight. Maintaining a healthy body weight is essential to helping you lower your blood cholesterol.

    Soluble Versus Insoluble Fibre

Low Fiber Diet Meal Plan Pin On Fitness T

There are two different types of fibre, soluble and insoluble. Theyre categorized into two sections based on whether or not the fibre dissolves in water or not.

Explaining the difference, Lily says, Soluble fibre dissolves in water and creates a gel that may help to reduce blood cholesterol and improves glucose control. Soluble fibre is found in foods such as fruit and oats.

Insoluble fibre doesnt dissolve in water but attracts water into your stool, making it softer and easier to pass. Insoluble fibre is found in foods such as whole grains and nuts.

    • Good sources of soluble fibre: oats, nuts, seeds, beans, apples and berries.
    • Good sources of insoluble fibre: brown rice, wheat bran, rye, spelt, fruits and vegetable

How Does A High Fibre Diet Work

When fibre, or roughage as its sometimes called, passes through our bowel, it absorbs water and bulks up the waste matter. This makes it easier for our bodies to get rid of the waste, keeping our bowels moving.

Fibre also feeds our gut bacteria, which is another key benefit for following a diet thats high in fibre. So not only does it help with bowel movements, it can also help our gut bacteria to support our overall health.

Lily explains, Did you know that we have more gut bacteria than skin cells on our body? We have a symbiotic relationship with our gut bacteria, they need a place to live, eat and reproduce and in turn their metabolic activity supports our own health in multiple ways.

This means that our diet also feeds our gut bacteria. Since fibre is the primary source of fuel for our healthy gut bacteria, a diet rich in wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds also helps our bacteria to flourish and grow.

How Much Fibre Do Children Need

Children dont need to have as much fibre as adults, but its still important to try and incorporate it into their diets. Government guidelines state that children between the ages of 2-5 should aim for 15g a day, 5-11 year olds should aim for 20g per day, and 11-16 year olds should aim for 25g a day.

Popular childrens foods high in fibre include beans, high-fibre cereals, wholegrain sandwiches, and raspberries. You should also ensure theyre drinking plenty of fluids if youre upping fibre intake.

Protein Sources On A High Carb Low Fat Diet

IBDCLUB- Nutrition Section| April 2021| Low Fat High Fiber Diet

Before I discuss protein sources, lets talk about how much protein to eat per day. Protein recommendations can vary quite a bit depending upon the source.

The Dietary Reference Intake recommends .36 grams of protein per pound of body weight.

    • 64 grams of protein per day for a 180-pound man.
    • 46 grams of protein per day for a 130-pound woman.

This number likely looks lower than you might expect. This is also almost exactly the protein number that an HCLF vegan diet would hit.

A common recommendation for gaining muscle is 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. This is triple the DRI recommendation.

For gaining muscle at the fastest possible rate, it is likely that you will want to eat more than the DRI recommendation. This doesnt mean that you need to eat three times the recommended amount.

The most comprehensive book on protein is written by Brad Pilon and is titled: Eat Stop Eat How Much Protein.

This book looks at dozens of studies regarding protein.

    What Do The Numbers Mean

Start by having your blood-cholesterol levels checked. This should be done minimally every 3-5 years. Your doctor will order a complete blood cholesterol profile. Compare your numbers with the following guidelines published by the National Cholesterol Education Program showing desirable and high levels and see where your numbers fall.

    Desirable Levels

    Triglycerides > 200 mg/dL

If your LDL count is above 240 and your HDL is below 40, then its time to make some important dietary changes. In a cholesterol-lowering diet, 25-35 percent or less of the days total calories should come from fat.

What Do You Do On A High Fibre Diet

Dr Lindy van den Berghe on Twitter: " #Diet #therapy to ...

Avoid eating too much meat as this contains no fibre at all. Instead, try to eat foods full of natural fibre such as fruit and veg, nuts, seeds and pulses. High fibre diets are a great choice for those wanting to cut down on meat and follow more of a plant-based diet.

Whilst fish has other benefits like omega-3 fatty acids, it also contains no fibre just like meat. So if you are looking to eat more fibre, your best bet is to load up on your fruit, veg and pulses when planning meals. When it comes to cereal-based foods, such as bread, pasta and actual breakfast cereals, the amount of fibre depends on how much the outer layer of the grain has been stripped away.

In general, the more processed food is, the less fibre it will contain. Thats why you should go for brown bread and rice, not white. Wholemeal pasta is better than the bleached, white type and when you buy cereal, look out for wholegrain brands like Shreddies and Shredded Wheat.
