Wheat Belly: 12 Rules For Healthy Eating

Interview with Dr. William Davis: Wheat Belly, Super Gut and Healing Yourself Through Diet!

by Dr. Davis | Sep 27, 2020 | Diet and Lifestyle |

Here is an updated list of the Wheat Belly approach to healthy eating, adding basic strategies for recultivating a healthy intestinal microbiome.

A hundred thousand years ago, youd have no doubt what and how to eat. You would wake up every morning, grab your spear, club, or axe and go kill something, wander and gather berries, nuts, or dig in the dirt for roots and tubers, or set traps for fish and reptiles. If you succeeded in the hunt, you would consume every organ that included thyroid, thymus, pancreas, stomach, liver, as well as meat. Youd drink water from streams and rivers and allow your skin surface to be exposed to sunlight. You would NOT shower with soap or shampoo, apply hand sanitizer, drink chlorinated water, consume foods laced with herbicides and pesticides or genetically-modified foods containing glyphosate or Bt toxin, or take antibiotics for a viral infection. You succeeded in diet without knowing anything about calories, fat grams, carbs, etc. but just following instinct and need.

  • Eat real, whole foodsOpt for an avocado or egg over protein powder or meal replacement shake or frozen dinner. A meal replacement shake is never an adequate replacement for the nutrient profile of real food.
  • What Dr Melinda Ratini Says:

    Does It Work?

If you lose weight on the Wheat Belly diet, it will likely be from making healthy food choices and not because you shunned gluten. There is no scientific evidence that foods with gluten cause more weight gain than other foods.

But the Wheat Belly diet doesnt only take away gluten. It also bans a whole host of other foods, including high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, sugary foods, rice, potatoes, soda, fruit juice, dried fruit, and legumes.

It is obvious that some of these, like high-fructose corn syrup, soda, trans fats, fried foods, and sugary foods, can quickly pack on the pounds. Getting them out of your diet is sure to help you lose weight. Legumes, however, are a powerhouse of protein and nutrients and can rightfully be a part of any healthy diet plan.

Is It Good for Certain Conditions?

Losing any extra weight will put you on the road to heart health and can help prevent diabetes. Cutting out the salt is great for your blood pressure.

But if you have high cholesterol or heart disease, you might want to avoid the high-fat dairy and the red meat that are allowed in the Wheat Belly Diet.

Davis encourages exercise, but the actual type and amount is left up to you. If you are out of shape or have health problems, talk to your doctor before ramping up your workout.

    The Final Word

The Wheat Belly Diet is not particularly easy to follow. You will have to change your shopping patterns, read labels, and get used to preparing many different foods.

Nutrition & Health Experts You Shouldnt Trust

Misinformation on nutrition and health seems more prevalent than evidence-based information. And its becoming more challenging to figure out just who the experts are.

Misinterpreted science, cherry-picked studies, conspiracies, and alluring anecdotes are the tools that many use to sell their stories. Below you will find some of the more popular people or websites that do not provide evidence-based advice, along with links to articles that explain their lack of credibility or point out the misinformation.

You will often see some of the following in their narratives:

    Weve been lied to . . .

I am focusing on the more popular trends/fads, and some of the more persuasive experts who cite scientific evidence to back up their stories. This is just a start, and a full list of sources with misinformation is beyond the scope of what I can do, but check back because I will be expanding this list.

      The Reasoning Behind Wheat Belly

The original Wheat Belly book claims that wheat strains have been hybridized, crossbred, and introgessed to make the wheat plant resistant to environmental conditions and to increase yield per acre. These changes have required drastic changes in genetic code, which change how our body and immune system reacts to wheat. Wheat is also an appetite stimulant, and in some people it can yield drug-like neurological effects. Grains, including wheat, are acid-producing, and reduce LDL particle size. Digestive by-products in wheat lead to joint inflammation, increased blood sugar, brain effects, and effects on the skin. The book also recommends an overall reduction in carbohydrates because of small LDL-triggering effects and appetite stimulation, and also foods that cause oxidation and AGE formation such as certain fats, cured meats, and processed foods.

      Wheat Alternatives Not Recommended

When is the next Wheat Belly 10

Wheat Belly advises dieters that many of the wheat-free foods available on the market are not truly healthy foods because they contain ingredients like cornstarch that will make you fat and diabetic.

Because Davis believes that a low carbohydrate diet is healthier for us he advises limiting gluten-free grains like

      • oats
      • millet
      • amaranth

He says they are best restricted to ½ cup servings and only consumed once used the wheat withdrawal process is over and ideal weight has been achieved. This holds true for legumes as well.

      The Wheat Belly Diet: Cons

      • The diet is restrictive, and it may be hard to maintain for the long-term, especially if foods such as bread, cookies, and pasta are among your favorites. “Losing weight doesn’t have to be this challenging,” Blake says. “Do you really need to go to this extreme?”
      • Wheat is in a huge number of packaged foods. You have to read food labels carefully because it can be hidden in everything from chewing gum to granola as an emulsifier or leavening agent.
      • When you remove all wheat from your diet, if you “cheat” and eat a slice of whole-wheat toast or half a bagel, the wheat could cause digestive problems, such as stomach cramps and gas.
      • You could be missing out on some important nutrients. “Whenever you limit whole types of foods, you have to make sure you’re eating healthfully,” Blake says. “This isn’t a well-balanced diet. You should sit down with a registered dietitian to be sure you’re meeting all your nutrient needs if you choose this diet.”
      • Although you can lose weight with this diet, it will be lost from all over your body, not just your “wheat belly” or love handles, Blake says. Weight loss doesn’t work that way you don’t lose from a specific area.

Wheat Belly Diet Plan Food List

The foods listed here are taken from all of the Wheat Belly books. Where theres contradictory advice in the books, its noted here.

      • Supplement iodine, 5-hydroxytryptohan, rhodiola

It may take 4-6 weeks to reach peak capacity for burning fat instead of carbohydrates.

The Wheat Belly Total Health book contains a timeline of what to expect when living grainlessly, recommendations on correct nutritional deficiencies cause by grains, and recommendations on how to repopulate with friendly flora.

    • Eat Fresh Fruits And Vegetables Always

William Davis | Super Gut | Talks at Google

Start with the simplest fresh fruits and vegetables. Vegetables can be consumed in unlimited amounts as long as you ensure that they will not be cooked in bad fats or oils. However, stay away from potatoes and canned vegetables of all kinds.

Potatoes are rich in starch and activate the same response as gluten-free foods.

Canned vegetables have many preservatives, especially Bisphenol A , which is unhealthy and has been associated with heart problems, endocrine disorders, cancer and inadequate neural development in fetuses.

Fruits need to be chosen wisely. Choose less sweet fruits like oranges and apples.

You can occasionally eat sweeter fruits such as mangoes and bananas as well.

But be careful about the amount of fruit you eat. The fruit contains glucose and fructose, which can contribute to weight gain, diabetes, and other related problems. Two servings are allowed in a 24 hour period.

Raw seeds and nuts are other types of good foods that can be consumed in unlimited quantities.

You can include pumpkin, linseed, sunflower, chia, sesame seeds and other raw seeds in your diet. You can include raw nuts such as almond, pecan, hazelnut, cashew nuts, and pistachios.

Healthy oils are also very good to avail in unlimited quantities.

These should be herbal oils like coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil. Cocoa butter is also a good plant-based oil. Condiments that are not sweet, such as parsley and mustard, along with natural seasonings, may also be used.

      The Wheat Belly Diet: Short

The foods you can eat on the Wheat Belly Diet are healthy, and you should lose weight rapidly if you stick to the plan. Weight loss can affect more than just your appearance: Study after study has shown it can boost heart health, reduce pain, improve your energy levels, and more. For example, someone who is prediabetic and loses just 15 pounds can reduce the risk for diabetes over three years by 58 percent, Blake says.

Because the diet is so new, not much is known about the long-term effects, Blake says, but serious health consequences are not anticipated. Overall, Blake remains skeptical.

“There’s nothing wrong with wheat,” she says. “It isn’t wheat that’s causing you to gain weight it’s the calories you’re eating. Just eat more fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet, and you can cut calories and lose weight while still occasionally eating foods that contain wheat.”

      Scientists Dispute Claims In Best

Critics say the anti-wheat claims made by leading health crusader Dr. William Davis are based on shaky science, an investigation by the fifth estate has found.

Davis is the author of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling book Wheat Belly, considered the bible of the wheat-free movement. He argues wheat has killed more people than all wars combined, and that it is responsible for an astonishing array of diseases diabetes, obesity, Crohns disease and autoimmune disease, among many others.

He also claims the wheat we eat now is not what it used to be. Rather, its a genetically modified monster he calls “Frankenwheat” and he says its killing us.

In the fifth estates War on Wheat, Davis tells Mark Kelley, “Im waging a war against misinformation in health, in which one of the major and most destructive messages is to create a diet rich in healthy whole grains.”

Davis is an unlikely warrior. He was a cardiologist in Milwaukee, trying to lose a few pounds to help fight his type 2 diabetes. He never conducted any of his own scientific studies, but found that after cutting wheat from his diet, his blood sugar levels were significantly reduced and his extra weight melted away.

He also heard similar stories from others: Patient after patient came back and said, ‘Well, I did that, my blood sugars much better and I also lost 43 pounds and I didnt do anything else.'”

      Dr Davis Number One Secret

      Wheat Belly: Health & Weight

      L. reuteri is my favorite microbe, and most of us currently have none in our systems, he shares. Among L. reuteris many benefits: Its been linked to better blood sugar, faster fat burn, lifelong slenderness, rapid hair growth, youthful skin, accelerated healing, superimmunity, lower stress, reversal of age-related bone and muscle loss and much more. Its enough to turn back the clock 20 years, says Dr. Davis.

Theres more. According to Massachusetts Institute of Technology studies, L. reuteri triggers our brains to release a surge of oxytocin, the hormone of love, empathy and human connection, says Dr. Davis. The effect goes beyond a little improvement in mood. You suddenly like your spouse, family and co-workers more. Loops of negative thoughts running through your head go away. Depression, rage, anxiety people are stunned by the degree of relief they get.

Also key: A growing army of good bacteria like L. reuteri naturally crowds out bad bacteria that make us sick, hungry and prone to fat storage. As this happens, even pounds that never budged before just fall off, says Dr. Davis. His devotees tell us theyve shed up to 45 pounds a month.

      Dave Asprey Bulletproof Executive

Dave Asprey, the bulletproof executive, is an entrepreneur, blogger, and paleo proponent who is good at selling things but doesnt know much about health or nutrition . His main claim to fame is Bulletproof® coffee, which I wrote about here. Claims for bulletproof coffee include that it helps burn fat, provides lasting energy, improves focus, helps gain muscle, increases mental acuity, helps digestion, and improves heart health.

But . . . you need to buy his special Upgraded coffee that is low in mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are a form of mold found on coffee beans and in greater amounts on many other foods : most mycotoxins on coffee beans are destroyed by roasting, and there is no evidence that low levels are harmful to health.

Bulletproof coffee is not a healthy breakfast: it provides about 460 calories and about 47 g fat , taking the place of protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health. There is no good evidence that a breakfast of coffee with large quantities of saturated fat delivers any of the laundry list of benefits beyond potential short-term cognitive or long-term health benefits of coffee.

Why stop at coffee when you can make so much money? Beyond his bulletproof coffee Asprey sells books and a variety of products claiming to improve health. And of course, there is the bulletproof diet , described so well by health and science writer Julia Beluz as follows:

      Dr Oz: Wheat Replacement Foods

Dr Davis said that cutting out wheat doesnt have to mean giving up favorite foods. You just have to learn to change the recipes to wheat-free versions or make substitutions.

You can use ground almonds and coconut flour, for example, in place of wheat flour and related products. For pasta dishes swap Shirataki Noodles or Spaghetti Squash instead.

Why Davis And Other Experts Believe Wheat Is Unhealthy

      • One example I have for you is that we feed wheat to animals to fatten them up. Why would we want to fatten up?
      • The modern day wheat crop is less nutritious than it used to be. This is true with most big business food systems across the world.
      • Most argue that this modern wheat crop does not digest well in our intestinal tract. This is not proven, simply a theory.

The Overview | Wheat Belly’s Dr. William Davis (Part 1)

WHEAT BELLYDr. Davis practices preventative cardiology in Milwaukee. He says, Americans are plagued by obesity on a scale never before seen in the human experience. He attributes that rapid rise to wheat, and its consumption in almost every product in various forms. He knows from personal experience. Dr. Davis had what he calls a long and personal relationship with wheat. Growing up he ate a lot of processed food. For breakfast, he would have Trix, Lucky Charms, and Fruit Loops. For lunch he would have various sandwiches with a Ho Ho or Scooter Pie for dessert. Family dinners would usually consist of TV dinners with battered chicken and some kind of bread or breaded dessert.

Dr. Davis says that todays genetically altered wheat is very different from the natural wheat from years ago and produces unexpected results in the body Some results in the body are diabetes, acid reflux, asthma symptoms, IBS, and other digestive problems. Dr. Davis says this is why people can exercise a lot and still not drop weight. He has found how to eat without wheat and tells his patients how to eat in a healthier way.

REAL FOOD SOLUTION The solution to wheat belly and all the adverse effects of wheat is to return to real, singular foods . Here are three things Dr. Davis says you can do now to stop wheat belly:
