Which Do We Prefer
Its Coke Zero for the win. If a flight attendant or a vending machine gives me the choice, Ill zero in on Coke Zero every time.
I know cola drinkers who are still mourning the Coke Zero formulation that we lost last year, and I get it. When I first tested the old formula Coke Zero vs. the new one, I vastly preferred the old one. But I cant live in the past. This Coke Zero is what we have now, and Ill drink to that.
The Bottom Line: Are Either Bad For You And Should You Switch From One To Another
When consumed in moderation, the likely answer is no, neither are bad for you. Both are likely a better choice for individuals who are looking to scale back their sugar consumption, and making the switch to either of these from regular Coca-Cola is not a bad idea. Regardless of whether you regularly consume Coke Zero Sugar or Diet Coke, you do not have to make the shift from one to the other. The only reason you would do this is if you had true concerns over your consumption of aspartame or acesulfame K. Women who are pregnant, may want to only consume aspartame and so should stick with Diet Coke, whereas, those who already consume a lot of aspartame from other sources, may want to stick with Coke Zero Sugar.
It Prepares Our Taste Buds For Sweetness
You likely know that the more regularly you taste something , the more accustomed to it you become. This phenomenon is why somebody who stops consuming sugar or salt finds many commercially available foods overly salty or too sweet .
So it is worth thinking that artificial sweeteners are dramatically sweeter than sugar. Although it may not report that way on your tongue, diet soda is, in fact, considerably sweeter than typical soda.
All that sweetness escorted by zero calories mistakes your brain and your metabolic processes and tends to flee you craving sugar more than before.

Key Differences Between Coke Zero And Diet Coke
These products are essentially the same, especially in regards to their main selling point: not containing sugar.
What differs between the two is the type of sweetener they contain, as well as their caffeine content, although these two differences are still unlikely to be significant to most people.
While Diet Coke uses aspartame as its sweetening agent, Coke Zero uses both aspartame and acesulfame potassium, also called Ace K or acesulfame K.
Acesulfame potassium is another calorie-free sweetener that passes through the body without raising blood sugar levels.
Per Diet Cokes ingredient label, its primary sweetener is aspartame, and since ingredients are listed in order by weight, its reasonable to assume that it contains much less acesulfame potassium. This means that these drinks are quite similar in terms of ingredients .
The other key difference is caffeine content. Coke Zero has less caffeine than Diet Coke. However, both beverages are well below the recommended daily caffeine limit of 400 mg per day for adults .
One debatable difference is the taste of these two drinks. Some say they cannot taste a difference, while others swear by either Diet Coke or Coke Zero as tasting closest to the real deal.
Coke Zero has less caffeine than Diet Coke. It also uses an additional sweetener, acesulfame potassium, that Diet Coke doesnt. Overall, their ingredient contents and nutritional profiles are similar.

We all have our vices, right? Being from the Midwest, I grew up on pop . For a long time, I was a regular, classic Coca-Cola girl. I just couldn’t get into the taste of Diet Coke even though I knew I was consuming a lot of sugar. Then, Coke Zero came along, and I found a new favorite. I felt like I could indulge my craving for a sweet, carbonated beverage with less risk to my health.
Today, the Coke Zero I fell in love with doesn’t technically exist. Both Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar have new formulations and, in the first case, even a few new flavors. Looking at the two “new” sugar-free options got us wondering if there was any real difference, from a health and nutritional standpoint, between the two. We asked Lori Chong, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator working at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH, to break it down for us.

It Drives Our Bodies To Make Insulin
Insulin, secreted by the pancreas, is how the human body stocks sugar. When the flavor of artificial sweeteners strikes your brain, it automatically transmits a signal to your pancreas to start making insulin.
Insulin informs our cells to either benefit from sugar or reserves it as fat.
Without it, our bodies cannot process the sugar that anchors in our bloodstreams. When your pancreas makes insulin to deal with regular sugar, no sugar comes, and it mistakes your body and disrupts its metabolic function.
This body reaction may clarify why several analyses have displayed a link between regularly sipping diet soda and metabolic syndrome, a cluster of symptoms that contains a larger waist rim, more elevated blood pressure, and more high blood sugar.
