Lowers Risk Of Insulin Resistance And Type 2 Diabetes

Weight Loss Wednesday | DASH Diet making a comeback in the COVID era

Given its third-place ranking in the Best Diets Overall category and third in Best Diets for Diabetes in the 2018 Best Diet Rankings by U.S. News and World Report, its not surprising that a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that a vegetarian diet was more effective at reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes than a diabetes-friendly diet.

In the study, 74 participants consumed the same number of calories for six months. Some went on a vegetarian diet, and others went on a diet that emphasized reducing sugars, refined carbs, cholesterol, and saturated fat. Interestingly, people on the vegetarian diet lost more subcutaneous fat , subfascial fat , and intramuscular fat . The fat stored in your muscles can impact your metabolism and lead to insulin resistance .

A study published in Diabetes Care cited specifically, flexitarians had a lowered risk of type 2 diabetes compared with nonvegetarians. In addition, being overweight is one of the biggest risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and this same study showed that flexitarians had lower BMIs than nonvegetarians.

That said, some of the most popular diets today didnt fare as well. Near the bottom? The paleo diet the raw food diet, of which a raw vegan diet is one type Atkins diet , a low-carb diet similar to keto Whole30 , keto , and Dukan . Newcomer modified keto was tied with Whole30 for the No. 35 spot. Rather than focusing on lifestyle changes that can stick for the long haul, these plans present a quick fix thats not maintainable, says Kennedy. Those trendy diets that eliminate whole food groups or call for extreme changes or deprivation will not rank well with wellness professionals, and this is represented in these rankings, she says.

Modified keto is a looser version of keto that people who do not have epilepsy follow, notes Kennedy. On the modified version, you consume 82 percent of your calories from fat, while its 90 percent from fat on a classic keto diet, perU.S. News & World Report. Still, outside of a medical need for the diet, such as for epilepsy, this high-fat plan can backfire. These diets are incredibly high in fat and very low in carbohydrates. As a result, they encourage limiting or eliminating healthy foods such as whole grains, legumes, dairy, and many types of fruit. To me, this is a red flag, she says.

Fiber is a nutrient the majority of adults and children are not getting enough of, says Gans. Its easy to boost your fiber intake when you consume mostly fruits and vegetables, along with plant-based proteins like beans, nuts, and seeds, she says. One of the benefits of upping your fiber intake is feeling fuller for longer, she adds. In fact, one study published in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that increasing fruit and veggie intake may help with weight loss, suggesting a correlation between fiber intake and weight loss. 01556-2/fulltext” rel=”nofollow”> 14)

A second study, which was published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found that people who increased the amount of pulses they consumed , which are high in fiber, they felt felt full longer, and also had a higher intake of micronutrients like thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, Fe, Mg, P and Zn, compared with non-consumers.

How Does The Flexitarian Diet Work Exactly

You can think of this diet as a vegetarian-ish way of eating since this plan touts the basic principles and benefits of a plant-based diet, along with the inclusion of some animal proteins to a lesser extent, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, RDN, Chicago-based author of The Flexitarian Diet, the book that inspired the diet craze. That means that while vegetarian staples such as tofu, quinoa, tons of produce, and other veggie-focused favorites may be the stars of your diet, no foods are taken away or strictly forbidden. But the flexitarian label isnt equivalent to lazy vegetarian instead, its an approach that advocates actively decreasing meat consumption.

As its name suggests, the diet is flexible, but there are some guidelines about how much meat you can eat. In her book, Blatner suggests that eaters who are new to the Flexitarian Diet first try Beginner Flexitarian and forgo meat two days a week, eating no more than 26 ounces of meat in total during the remaining five days. For reference, a card-deck-sized portion of chicken or steak is about 3 oz, while a piece the size and thickness of your palm clocks in at 4 to 6 oz.

The next tier, Advanced Flexitarian, cuts meat consumption down further by suggesting people follow a vegetarian diet three to four days a week and consume no more than 18 oz of meat total during the rest of the week. The final level, Expert Flexitarian, requires five meat-free days but allows 9 oz of meat during the other two days. .

What Are The Best Foods On The Dash Diet

DASH Diet Mediterranean Solution: The Beginner Guide for ...

On the DASH diet, you are instructed to eat the most servings of fruits and vegetables. The recommended amounts are five servings of vegetables and five servings of fruit each day. Beyond that, carbohydrates are fully embraced on this plan and seven servings of whole grains are recommended each day. Meat is eaten in moderation, with lean options suggested two times a day and low-fat dairy is the same. Nuts and seeds are recommended, but only two to three times a week.

While the serving suggestions are pretty specific, there is actually a lot of flexibility once youve grown accustomed to monitoring your servings of each food group. With a good cookbook, youll quickly learn that meat and dairy play second fiddle to the many delicious produce and whole-grain options you can cook with each day.

Oh, to be a celebrityfame, fortune, and the ability to have personal trainers and nutritionists on speed dial when you want to lose a few pounds. For mere mortals, however, weight loss isnt quite so easy.

Thats where Noom comes into playa fitness and weight-loss program. But, uh, what exactly is it? And what makes Noom any different than any other weight-loss program or app out there? Heres my personal take on Noom, as a registered dietitian. The short version: I see real potential with the Noom weight-loss app, and a few cons for some groups of peopleso read on.

FIRST, WHAT IS NOOM EXACTLY?

Noom claims to be the last weight-loss program youll ever need, according to its website. Its like having a trainer, nutritionist, and health coach all in one place .Where Noom differs from other apps, however, is its focus on making behavioral changes surrounding dieting and weight loss. The app will show you, for example, the best foods to eat . While I typically dont like to label certain foods as red or badI do think Noom does a good job of not instilling fear around certain foods, rather taking an educational approach to help its users understand how to make balanced choices and why they recommend certain foods over the others. The app also prompts you to read tidbits on healthy habits and rate your motivationand will quiz you after.

The 6 Best Multivitamins For Men

Additionally, while the topic of multivitamins has been hotly debated, one review published in Scientific Review and Clinical Applications suggests incorporating a nutritional supplement can help lead to optimal health, which suggests that a daily multivitamin could be beneficial in providing insurance to help meet overall nutritional needs. Blatner adds that taking a multivitamin can help ensure youre not skimping on important nutrients.

Moreover, no matter which diet you follow, its important to include exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Thats why Blatner strongly encourages that flexitarians get 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five days a week , along with strength training at least two days per week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week or 75 minutes of high-intensity workouts, so if you work out for 20 to 30 minutes a day, five days a week, youll be right on track.

But being flexible about the type of activity you do is key, so whether its dancing, swimming or walking the dog, you should pick an activity that increases the likelihood of exercise happening on a regular basis, suggests Blatner.

Brief History Of Noom

WorkSmart Labs was founded in 2008 and later changed its name to Noom. Noom got its name from the Moon. The Moon is the brightest light in the night sky, and the founders of Noom wanted this lifestyle app to be a guiding light for anyone who wants to live a healthier lifestyle.

Since the inception of the Noom app in 2016, more than 50 million Noom members have subscribed to a healthier lifestyle through technology. Noom is now one of the most searched diets globally and has a long list of investors that include Sequoia Capital, TransLink Capital, and Samsung Ventures. The cofounders of Whats App, Oscar Health, and Door Dash also made significant investments during Nooms latest funding round.

Noom is always expanding its program offerings. In October 2019, Noom teamed up with Novo Nordisk, a Bagsværd-based healthcare company, to fight obesity on a global level.

Research also suggests that Flexitarians may live about 3.6 years longer than their carnivorous counterparts, likely as a result of the reduced risk of disease. Meanwhile, a study of over half a million people published in Archives of Internal Medicine found that red and processed meat intakes were associated with modest increases in total death rates, death by cancer, and death by heart disease.

Clinical Research On Weight Watchers

A study published in Lancetfound that patients who used a commercial program like Weight Watchers to lose weight lost twice as much weight as patients who attempted to lose weight on their own. This increase in weight loss is attributed to personal support and accountability.

A study published in theAnnals of Internal Medicine suggests that Weight Watchers may not be as effective as behavioral counseling.

Rules Of Weight Watchers

The WW Diet is similar to Noom in that it doesnt require dieters to follow a strict set of rules. Weight Watchers uses a point system to categorize foods. The number of points a food or beverage is worth depends on the calorie, fat, and sugar content. Healthier foods have lower point values.

When a user signs up for the WW Diet, they are assigned a point budget. Your point budget is the number of points you can spend on any given day.

The average Weight Watchers member has a 35 point daily budget. If they choose to eat grilled chicken and steamed vegetables for dinner, it will cost them 8 points. If they opt for an unhealthy cheeseburger with french fries, theyll have to spend 25 points. Over time, members realize that they can eat more in a day if they choose healthier foods. In theory, this forms lifelong habits.

Dieters can also earn extra points by exercising. Theyll earn FitPoints that can be exchanged for SmartPoints on the WW Diet app. The WW Diet app includes a fitness tracker, live support from a personalized coach, guided meditations, and audio workouts.

Which Diet Is Healthiest

Almost any weight-loss diet will work if we stick to the rules and ideals of that diet. We lose weight on restrictive diets simply because weve reduced the kilojoules were consuming, no matter what foods the kilojoules come from. Losing weight when we have been overweight is usually associated with better health measures and more exercise, too.

Believe it or not, losing weight is not the big problem with diets. Keeping it off is the issue. We often feel deprived on these diets and cant sustain that way of eating long term. To maintain weight we need a long-term, sustainable way of eating. A recent study by Yale university doctors David Katz and Stephanie Meller reviewed the research around dietary patterns including low-carb, low-fat, low-GI, Mediterranean, mixed-balanced, paleo and vegan. And guess which won? There was no clear winner there were many different ways to eat a healthy diet. However, the evidence was consistent that a diet based mainly on plant foods and with greater emphasis on natural unprocessed foods was better for us.

The DASH diet, rich in vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, has been named the best overall diet for the fifth consecutive year, outpacing Weight Watchers and the Mediterranean diet, U.S. News & World Report said on Tuesday.

DASH, which was developed to lower blood pressure without medication, was also chosen by a panel of health experts as the top diabetes diet and the best plan for healthy eating.

Weight Watchers retained the No. 1 spot as the best diet for weight loss, followed by the HMR low-calorie, meal-replacement plan and Jenny Craig, which offers prepared meals to drop excess pounds.

“The DASH diet has been our top diet overall for five years now and this is the fifth year we are evaluating and ranking diets,” said Angela Haupt, senior health and wellness editor at U.S. News & World Report.

“Our experts, who rate these diets for us, say it will end up being very good for your waistline, in addition to your high blood pressure, because it is such a common-sense, balanced diet,” she added in an interview.

The TLC diet, which is designed to lower levels of cholesterol, came in second in the best overall category, followed by the Mediterranean diet, Weight Watchers and the Mayo Clinic Diet, which each tied for third place.

At the opposite end of the scale is the Paleo Diet, which focuses on meat, fish and vegetables, and the four-phase Dukan Diet, tied for last place.

Us News & World Report Rankings May Only Tell Part Of The Story

bySophie Putka, Enterprise & Investigative Writer, MedPage Today January 4, 2022

Each year, in a flurry of New Year’s resolutions, spike reliably for the search term “best diets.” And each year, the U.S. News & World Report delivers.

For 2022, its top rankings for categories like “Best Diets Overall,” “Easiest Diets to Follow,” “Best Diets for Diabetes,” and “Best Heart-Healthy Diets” reflect a long-term trend toward eating patterns and flexibility and away from crash diets.

Perhaps, experts suggest, a reckoning with the concept of a “diet” altogether is underway, although some familiar brand-names retained some top slots.

In six out of nine categories, the “Mediterranean diet” — which emphasizes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and fats from sources like nuts and seeds — came out on top, including for the best overall diet.

“A lot of people, when they’re trying to pick a ‘diet,’ that usually means short term, it means not sustainable, it means that it could wreak havoc on the body if it’s not sustained,” said Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

“The Mediterranean ‘diet,’ is not a diet, it’s just a way of eating,” said Stanford, who was one of 27 experts selected by U.S. News this year to rank the 40 “diets” considered in the running.

  • Interference With Existing Conditions and Medications This diet can work for many people, including those with certain preexisting medical conditions, says Schafer. Yet if you fit into this category, youre better off going to an in-person clinic. Thats because individuals who have preexisting conditions, such as renal kidney disease, gout, or diabetes, will want to make sure that the plan takes these conditions into account. Theyll also need to factor in how a new low-calorie diet may impact medications they are taking. For example, if you have kidney disease, a dietitian may have to monitor your plan to be mindful of any restrictions on nutrients, such as potassium and sodium, and fluid intake, Schafer says. Meanwhile, those with gout will need to watch the uric acid levels in the foods they choose.
