Exercise Can Help Regulate Food Consumption

Exercise boosts brain plasticity, which is the brains ability to adapt its functions based on new input. Boosting brain plasticity makes it easier to change our habits and lifestyle. More and more evidence has shown that regular physical activity can increase prefrontal brain function and improve cognition.

These exercise-induced increases in prefrontal brain function and cognition makes it easier to regulate or limit our consumption of junk foods. And we can see the effects with as little as 20 minutes of moderate intensity exercise.

I have shown that people consume less ultra-processed food such as chips or milk chocolate after 20 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise . Research has also shown that both a single session of high-intensity interval training and a 12-week high-intensity aerobic exercise programme can reduce preferences or appetite for high-calorie junk foods. Similar effects are seen when people engage in moderate aerobic exercise or strength training.

The key takeaway here is that regular exercise can reduce how much people want junk foods and improve their ability to resist the temptation of these appealing foods by improving brain function and cognition. This makes it easier to limit the consumption of these foods to achieve healthier eating and weight loss goals.

A recent editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine argued that while exercise is an important tool in reducing the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and other health conditions, it isnt enough when it comes to losing weight or staying healthy.

Let us bust the myth of physical inactivity and obesity. You cannot outrun a bad diet, the authors wrote.

Reviewing several studies, the authors pointed to misleading marketing messages that suggest all calories are equal and the public perception that obesity is entirely due to a lack of exercise.

Even people at a healthy weight must watch their diet and the authors pointed to studies that suggest up to 40 percent of people with a normal BMI will have metabolic conditions associated with obesity, including heart disease and hypertension.

Exercise and diet are key elements of the American Heart Associations Lifes Simple 7, a group of seven health factors and behaviors that research has shown contributes to heart health, lowers the risks of heart disease and improves quality of life.

Nearly 70 percent of American adults are either overweight or obese, and as many as 50 percent of Americans dont get the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week.

The benefits of each work on different mechanisms of the body, Young said.

Understanding Physical Activity And Metabolic Demand

There are countless benefits to increasing physical activity and exercise, but most people already know this.

Consider that exercise does more than simply burn calories. Exercise essentially speeds up our metabolic processes – so your body uses micronutrients and creates metabolic waste products at a higher rate.3 This increases the demand for all of the biochemical tools needed for healthy metabolism and for neutralizing and eliminating harmful waste.1,2

Also consider that exercise helps build bigger and stronger muscles. You cant build strong muscles without the proper building supplies. Despite the popular trends, the proper supplies include more than a sugar-filled protein powder shake. Your body demands more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to keep the cells healthy on a biochemical level.47

Effects Of Dieting On Metabolic Supply

You’ve heard the advice before eat less, smaller portions, incorporate more fruits and vegetables, limit fat and sugar intake. Unfortunately, people tend to focus entirely on the eat less, smaller portion, fewer calories part and forget to incorporate more healthy foods like vegetables and fruits. People end up eating smaller amounts of the same bad foods or substituting them with low-fat, sugar-free, or diet options.

This might be effective for decreasing total calories, but it likely doesn’t help meet the body’s demands for vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega-3’s and amino acids. If you are on a restricted diet that has you eating less, are you still supplying your body with everything it demands?

Diet of an Athlete

A seasoned athlete can burn thousands of calories every day, and will also eat thousands of extra calories to help nourish the body after strenuous workouts. They aren’t trying to lose weight, but instead trying to maintain balance for a healthy body. While they may closely watch their diet, it is likely not restrictive in the same sense that typical weight-loss diets are.

Depending on their dietary choices, the seasoned athlete is likely getting a good amount of what the body is demanding because they are able to eat more food without gaining weight.8 Many athletes will also add dietary supplements to their regimen because they understand the effects strenuous exercise has on the body and want to be sure they are properly nourished.

Unhealthy Food Is Damaging Our Health

I saw this first hand in my career as an anesthesiologist. From time to time, some of my heart surgery patients were healthy-looking runners in their 50s and 60s, presenting for coronary artery bypass surgery due to clogged arteries to the heart. Naturally, they expressed disbelief: I thought running would protect my heart. I run marathons! How could this happen to me? Even the cardiac surgeons were surprised to see seemingly healthy people present with such severe heart disease.

Inflammatory foods will potentially clog our blood vessels, even if we exercise enough to burn off the extra calories. Junk food is high in sugar, fat, and salt and causes inflammation, hardening, and clogging of our arteries , even if we are diligent about working out. Junk food creates inflammation that puts us at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and more. Although exercise is good for us, we must not develop a false sense of security. Ultimately its important to realize that we cannot outrun a bad diet.

Burning Excess Calories Is Unrealistic

Its easier to consume calories than to burn them off. To burn off a single M& M , youd have to walk the length of one football field . A couple of thin-crust pizza slices would require walking for 1 hr 23 minutes or running for 43 minutes. Its not very practical to rely on exercise to offset bad food. Its unrealistic, and most of us dont have enough time in the day to outrun a bad diet.

If You Don’t Have A Strong Good Healthy Foundation It Doesn’t Matter How Hard You Work You Will Not Get The Results You Want

For somebody exercising solely to lose weight, the one thing more soul destroying than the calorie counter on your treadmill telling you after 30 minutes of pounding that you have only burned the equivalent of half a Twix, is the weighing scales that shows you havent lost a single pound all week, despite your excruciatingly sweaty efforts.

Many people make the mistake of focusing on exercise to lose weight, but the latest research has shown that exercise alone is not enough, and that cutting back on calorie intake should be the focus for weight loss.

While physical activity reduces the risk of a range of ailments such as heart disease, dementia, some cancers and Type 2 Diabetes, as well as reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, it does not promote weight loss, according to the research.

A study carried out by Prof Herman Pontzer and his team at City University of New York, published in Current Biology earlier this year, is the latest to challenge obesity prevention strategies that recommend increasing daily physical activity as a way to lose weight.

Can You Exercise Off A Bad Diet

    Maybe, just maybe, if you squat till you drop and burpee into oblivion you can burn off those fried fish tacos, chocolate frosted donuts, and bags upon bags of Funyuns.

    Its a nice thoughtand people definitely try. But, sadly, you cant exercise off a crappy diet. Science backs it up. In one studyliterally entitled: It is Time to Bust the Myth of Physical Inactivity and Obesity: You Cannot Outrun a Bad Dietpublished last year in the British Medical Journal, researchers confirmed this, and also argued the over-emphasis on physical exercise at the expense of dieting encourages manufacturers to create a health halo legitimization of nutritionally deficient products.

    The burn-and-refuel mentality is dangerous. If you burn 600-800 calories boxing, in a HIIT session, or running then treat yourself to a double cheeseburger, then yeah, your fat loss has just become a herculean struggle.

    Your diet provides the body with necessary nutrients to support metabolic activity, especially during exercise and physical activity. Failure to provide adequate nutritional support from vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids can contribute to oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction.

    • Your diet is supposed to provide your body with essential nutrients

    Whats causing obesity to go up in the U.S., the U.K., and so much of the rest of the developed world, along with associated diseases like diabetes? If you ask most people, their response will be something like, People are eating too much and theyre more sedentary than they used to be. Researchers are spending a great deal of time trying to determine whether or not this is an accurate assessment and just how much of the blame should be parceled out to diet versus exercise.

    In an editorial in the British Medical Journal, a trio of researchers led by Dr. Aseem Malhotra of Frimley Park Hospital in the U.K. argues that the focus on physical activity is wrong. And not only is it wrong, they write, but its also a convenient way for the companies selling us unhealthy stuff to sidestep culpability. Malhotra and his colleagues write that even over the past 30 years, as obesity has rocketed, there has been little change in physical activity levels in the Western population . It doesnt make sense to blame the obesity crisis on sedentary lifestyles, then but given how diets have changed in recent decades, it does make sense to look to food, in particular the upward trajectory of carb and sugar intake.

    When I teach people how to get in shape, part of their education is about the relationship between three specific variables: strength training, eating to support metabolism and cardiovascular exercise.

    It makes it easy to figure out “where to start” and, in fact, at our initial consultation, I hold up three fingers and ask three questions “Are you exercising in a way that builds and maintains muscle?” “Are you eating to support metabolism?” And, “Are you doing a moderate amounts of aerobic exercise?”

    As the answers are revealed, I either lower a finger or keep it up. If all three fingers stay up, they are doing everything exactly right! The more likely scenario is that they are doing one or two things right and are failing at one or two other things. Sometimes, all three fingers are lowered meaning that they’ve got a lot of work to do.

    My core message is always the same. To get the best results, you really need to optimize all three areas of your fitness planning. Build muscle, eat to support your metabolism and get your heart and lungs working. Because of this, I was intrigued when I saw an article from a former client of mine who happens to be a leading researcher in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University.

      Low Calorie Count Does Not Always Mean It’s Healthy

      When you aren’t very active, it lowers your body’s demand for energy , and it becomes easier to consume more calories than the body needs. This causes weight gain and can lead to chronic diseases.

      For decades, the approach to weight loss has been primarily focused on increasing your bodys demand for calories by exercising more, and reducing the supply of calories by eating less.

      While this is usually effective for short-term weight loss, it is not enough because your body does not simply run on the economics of calories consumed vs. calories burned. There are other metabolic processes that have nutritional demands that must be met.
