Excessive caffeine. One or two cups of coffee or tea a day, amounting to 300 milligrams or less, are safe while you’re breastfeeding . More than that, however, may lead to you and your baby feeling jittery, irritable and sleepless. Other sources of caffeine include tea, soda and chocolate.
High-mercury fish. The same EPA guidelines on fish safety that apply to pregnant women also apply to breastfeeding women: Avoid high-mercury fish including shark, orange roughy, swordfish, marlin, big eye tuna, tilefish and King mackerel. Limit tuna to 8 to 12 ounces a week of canned light tuna or no more than 4 ounces a week of white albacore tuna.
Some herbal supplements. Few studies have been done on the safety of herbal supplements, so little is known about how they affect a nursing baby. Plus, the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t evaluate them for safety or efficacy. To stay safe, ask your doctor before taking any herbal remedy, and think twice before drinking herbal tea or breastfeeding brews. For now, stick to reliable brands in varieties that are considered safe during lactation . Read labels carefully to check for the exclusion of other herbs.
Can You Take Diet Pills While Breastfeeding

So many people told me that if I was nursing that The weight would just fall off. but when that didnt happen, I started to really feel defeated and lose hope.
What Might Happen If A Nursing Mother Loses Weight Too Quickly
- In most instances of too-rapid weight loss, it is not the breastmilk that would suffer, but moms nutrition and/or health.
- Excessive dieting can result in a reduced milk supply.
- According to Breastfeeding and Human Lactation , it is noted that fad or rapid weight loss programs should be avoided because fat-soluble environmental contaminants and toxins stored in body fat are released into the milk when caloric intake is severely restricted. I was unable to find a definition of severely restricted but I expect that it is significantly under 1500 calories per day . Ive included information on a study on this subject below. Myth #: You Have To Avoid Certain Foods So Your Baby Doesnt Get Gassy
When a breastfed baby fusses for seemingly no reason, its often attributed to gas caused by something the mom ate. But this isnt true in most cases. For a majority of people, what you eat is not going to make your baby feel bad.
However, your breast milk does change flavor depending on what you consume. Breast milk flavors accustom your child to the types of foods your family eats. Your baby may be a bit reluctant to try different flavored breast milk, especially if its garlicy or spicy, but the flavor wont hurt them.
Its a different story for babies who have a food allergy or sensitivity, most commonly a reaction to dairy in the mothers diet. Only about 3% of exclusively breastfed babies have this problem.
Signs that your child may have a serious problem include:
- Blood or mucus in poop
- Skin rash, eczema or hives
- Severe fussiness
- Indications of abdominal pain like a tight, swollen belly
If youre concerned your baby is having an allergic reaction, immediately contact your pediatrician. But if youre simply noting that your child doesnt feed as well or consistently seems more fussy or gassy after you eat certain foods, consider avoiding those items for a few days to see if it helps.
Myth #: Caffeine While Breastfeeding Is A No
Women who enjoy a cup of coffee can rejoice: Caffeine isnt off-limits while breastfeeding. Research has found that only about 1% of the caffeine you drink ends up in breast milk.
If you want caffeine, you can drink up to 200 milligrams per day without any worries. Just be sure to consider all sources of caffeine in your total limit for the day, including:
- Coffee and tea
- Chocolate and cocoa powder
- Some pain relievers
Also, experts note that younger babies are more sensitive to caffeine in breast milk. If youre consuming caffeine and notice your newborn having difficulty sleeping after breastfeeding, you may want to scale back your caffeine intake.

You should know that low-calorie and high-protein diets are discouraged by nutritionists when you are breastfeeding. Therefore, to lose weight while breastfeeding, it is best to follow the recommendations of specialists:
- Wait at least two months after giving birth to go on a diet.
- Eat five times a day so you dont have to snack all the time.
- Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, vegetables and legumes.
- Include fish in the diet , complex carbohydrates, skimmed dairy products and whole grains.
- Prioritize lean meats like chicken or turkey.
- Reduce the intake of sauces.
- Avoid sweets, especially if they are industrial.
- Drink a lot of water.

Celebrities Seem To Lose Baby Weight Quickly What’s Wrong With That
I am not sure how they are losing the weight so quickly, and it may not be the safest way. More than likely, the financial resources of the celebrities enable them to hire help with the baby and personal trainers to get them back into shape quickly because looking good is their business.
Restricting calories and going on a crash diet… is not going to help. Good nutrition is essential, as are sleep and physical activity — but those issues are harder to control than diet when you have a newborn. A healthy diet can help you overcome some of the fatigue associated with newborn care.
Going on a low-calorie diet may help you get the weight off quickly, but it can lead to the loss of lean muscle tissue and zap your energy level. Losing muscle mass lowers your calorie needs and can make it even harder to lose weight. New moms need diets that give them energy to cope with the demands of a newborn and any other children at home.
And, if you are a nursing mom, you canât restrict calories – otherwise, it will affect the quality of your breast milk.

Can I Drink Alcohol While Breastfeeding
Many breastfeeding mums choose to stop drinking alcohol. However, occasional light drinking while breastfeeding has not been shown to have any adverse effects on babies.8 Alcohol is best avoided until your baby is over three months old, though, and then enjoyed as an occasional treat, such as a small glass of wine.
If you do have an alcoholic drink, make sure you allow at least a couple of hours for the alcohol to go through your system before your next breastfeed.9 Alternatively, you could have a small drink while youre actually breastfeeding your baby, as by the time the alcohol is in your system, he will have finished feeding. Or for total peace of mind, if youre planning to have an alcoholic drink you could express and store milk beforehand and give that to your baby for his next feed.
Bear in mind that alcohol can temporarily reduce your milk yield,8 so if you do have a drink your baby may seem hungrier and want to feed more.
Building Yourself Back Up
Once your healthcare provider gives you the green light to start exercising more regularlyfor moms who had a c-section or lots of tearing, thats usually about eight weeks after giving birthyou should still go easy. If youre super-fatigued, the worst thing you can do is get all crazy with high-intensity exercise, says Clinton. It could actually make you gain weight instead of burning excess calories.
To help you in losing weight while breastfeeding, try to work yourself up to 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, which is about 20 to 30 minutes a day of walking. You can also resume things like yoga or tai chi, especially if you were practicing before baby. While exercising doesnt impact the composition of your breast milk, you should replace any fluid you lose through sweating to keep your milk supply up, says Davids. You also might want to pump or nurse before working out so youre not uncomfortably engorged.
Signs you may be working your body too hard too soon: You regularly leak urine while running, leaping or sneezing during workouts or you experience recurring joint pain. Dont brush any of this off to Oh, I just had a baby, says Clinton. These are signs your system isnt optimal and you need to go back to your medical team.

When you signup for Weight Watchers, they have an app that allows you to easily calculate your points. Under your settings, you can indicate that you are breastfeeding and the frequency.
In general, the following points will be added:

Foods To Eat While Breastfeeding
For the fastest way to lose weight while breastfeeding, dont count calories, says Detroyerrather, be mindful of the quality of foods youre eating. Instead of eating less, which would likely impact your milk supply, make your meals healthy and nutritious and just a bit bigger than normal. Add an extra ounce or two of protein at a meal, a cup of starch and a quarter cup of veggiesthats all you need, she says. Problems arise when you substitute nutrient-dense food for others because theyre quick and easy.
Grabbing the nearest bag of chips or cookies when youre exhausted and between feedings might be convenient, but cheese or a handful of almonds or crackers spread with peanut butter are better options. Try to stock up on these food groups to get your body back on track and keep your breast milk as nutritious as possible:
Fruits, vegetables and grains for minerals and vitamins. Detroyer suggests whole wheat, rye, quinoa, millet and farro.
Starches that provide energy to help your body produce milk. Good options include winter squash, beans, potatoes, pasta and rice.
Lean protein from meat, fish and nuts to help build and repair body tissue.
Fat. Your diet doesnt influence how much fat ends up in your milk, but it does impact the type. Olive oil, cheese, eggs, avocados, nuts and seeds help provide a good balance of monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital for babys brain development.
