30 lessons I learned from a 30 Day Juice Fast

Research shows that it is completely safe for healthy people to participate in a juice fast for up to three days and then return to a regular diet. Doing a juice fast for a longer period of time can increase the likelihood of experiencing the negative side effects of juicing such as headaches, hunger, and blood sugar swings, and there is no proof of benefit of increased “detoxification” with a longer fast.

Who Are Juice Cleanses Safe For

To determine who cleanses are safe for, we must weed out those that theyre not. Eating disorders, while not the only concern to mull over when considering going on a juice cleanse, are certainly a determining factor. I would highly discourage the use of juice cleanses for anyone who struggles with disordered eating or an eating disorder since it can just be an extension of the disorder, says holistic nutritionist Amanda Carneiro of Raw Fitness and Nutrition. Also, juice cleanses can create a calorie deficit and force the body to run on cortisol, which can be detrimental for anyone struggling with adrenal issues.

As a general rule of thumb, Carneiro says that cleanses are safe for those looking for a way to detox from unhealthy foods, alcohol, or an overall unhealthy lifestyle. They can also be beneficial for giving your digestive system a break, she adds. Many people who struggle with digestive issues can have trouble digesting the fibers in fruits and vegetables. Since juicing removes the fibers, she says a cleanse can be really easy on the digestive system.

At the end of the day, the best way to determine whether a juice cleanse is right for you is to chat with your doctor about any pre-existing conditions that could adversely interact with ingredients or methods of the cleanse.

What Are The Benefits Of Juice Fasting

Juice fasting has many touted benefits that include reducing inflammation, improving sleep, clearing skin, promoting weight loss, ridding the body of toxins, and reducing sugar cravings. But are these juices really worth the hype? Most of these claims are unsubstantiated and anecdotal rather than science-based, but there may be some positives to note from short-term juice fasting.

Only one study to date has investigated the effects of a juice fast on health. This study looked at how a three-day fruit and vegetable juice fast affected the gut microbiota, weight loss, and body composition of 20 healthy people. During the fasting period, people drank six 16-ounce bottles of juices that were a mixture of leafy green vegetables, roots, citrus, cayenne, and vanilla almond, totaling around 1,310 calories per day. After the fast, people could then resume their normal diet for two weeks.

The results showed that people lost a significant amount of weight during the juice fast, and that weight loss persisted over the following two weeks . However, the weight loss may have resulted from lower calorie intake in general rather than from the juice specifically, and beneficial changes in people’s gut microbiota may have been due to the overall increase of fruits and vegetables in the diet for those three days.

Juicing For Weight Loss With Dr Oz’s Green Drink

  • Broths of low-fat meat , poultry , fish. It is forbidden to use broth from cubes. When preparing the broth it is allowed to use natural seasonings , salt. Before using the broth, it must be filtered
  • Vegetable broth and soup-mashed potatoes
  • Freshly squeezed vegetable and fruit juices
  • Smoothies of non-starchy vegetables and unsweetened fruits
  • Compotes and fruit drinks from fruits, dried fruits and berries . Before use, the drink must be filtered
  • Kiseli from fruits, berries and cereals
  • Cocoa without sugar
  • Coffee without sugar
  • Tea without sugar
  • Mineral water without gas.

In addition to other drinks, with a drinking diet, you must drink at least 1,5 liters of purified water without gas per day. In order to speed up the metabolism, it is recommended to drink a glass of water on an empty stomach, you can add a couple drops of lemon juice.

Is A Juice Cleanse A Healthy Choice For You

It can provide a short-term boost for starting a new healthy eating program but it is not recommended as a long-term weight loss program.

Moreover, following a juice diet for three days may provide short-term weight loss, but it doesnt fulfill all your nutritional needs.

Also, it doesnt teach you how to plan, prep, and eat healthy meals for sustained weight loss for a longer term.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture 20202025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming a variety of vegetables, fruits, leafy greens, grains, lean meats, beans and legumes, nuts, seeds, dairy, and oil each day for a healthy, balanced diet.

Some have experienced some side effects in other juice cleanse diets like brain fog , digestive problems, and low energy levels.

While following a juice-only diet, people often experience side effects such as headaches, fatigue, inability to focus, moodiness, stomach pain and hunger pangs. Also, juice-only diets are bad idea for people with diabetes who may be on medication that regulates insulin activity. Drinking so much juice could lead to unstable blood sugar levels.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as people with compromised immune systems or weak heart, liver or kidney disease should also avoid juice cleanses.

After the initial juice cleanse, Katie and I fell into a regular routine of drinking our juice as breakfast. With this new routine came immediate gains and consequences.

As if a switch had flipped, we noticed a difference in our energy levels in the morning. The surge of nutrients turned out to be an amazing away to wake up the body and mind.

As the days went on, I could feel my body craving that boost every morning.     How We Felt After
