Is The 20/20 Diet A Healthy Choice For You
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming a variety of nutrient-dense foods including fruits and vegetables, grains, low-fat dairy products, lean protein, and healthy fats. The key recommendations in the federal guidelines are:
- “Vegetables of all typesdark green red and orange beans, peas, and lentils starchy and other vegetables
- Fruits, especially whole fruit
- Grains, at least half of which are whole grain
- Dairy, including fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese, and/or lactose-free versions and fortified soy beverages and yogurt as alternatives
- Protein foods, including lean meats, poultry, and eggs seafood beans, peas, and lentils and nuts, seeds, and soy products
- Oils, including vegetable oils and oils in food, such as seafood and nuts”
A benefit of the 20/20 Diet is that it includes a variety of foods from different food groups, at least during phases three and four. Even during the first two phases, the 20 power foods include dairy, fish, nuts and seeds, fruits, vegetables, and protein, though the diet does lack in whole grains and overall variety.
Once you move into phases three and four of the 20/20 Diet plan, you can start to add in more foods to meet the USDA recommendations for a healthy, balanced diet.
What Is The Dr Oz System 20 Plan
System 20 is Dr. Ozs weight loss and lifestyle plan for 2020, having launched this month for the new year. Oz claims that dieting is dead, and we all need something healthy and non-diet to help us take our health into our hands. Okay then!
The System 20 plan is made up of 20 rules, which you can see on this infographic I got off of Ozs site.
It sort of looks like the cover of Womens World Daily Magazine, which incidentally is the usual vehicle for Ozs crap:
Some of the rules are common sense. Sure, go to bed at the same time every night. Sleep hygiene is really important, Ill agree with that. Do some meditation. Okay, fine.
But the nutrition part of System 20 which is why were here is pretty brutal.
I cant believe I have to say this AGAIN about Dr. Oz, because it has been said plenty of times, but for someone who is a DOCTOR and should be evidence-based, he really misses the mark here. Our society trusts medical professionals to be legitimate and honest.
And if he was, hed call System 20 a low carb intermittent fasting diet. Because thats what it is, plus a couple of bullsh*t additions along the way.
Best Commercial Diet Plans
Considering there is no one-size-fits-all diet approach, and that people go on diets for very different reasons, in choosing the best commercial diet plans we decided to: 1) determine which ones met or exceeded our criteria, and, 2) assign each plan to a sub-category created by answering the question WHO, or WHAT, is this plan best FOR?
After an extensive research into the dieting business and analyzing dozens of popular and not-so-popular diet plans, we came up with five categories: Best Overall Plan, Best Long-Term Plan, Best Short-Term Plan, Best Low-Carb Plan, and Best App-Based Plan.
While all of them will theoretically help you lose weight, the one thats ideal for you may depend entirely on your lifestyle, your cravings for certain foods, and how long youre willing to stick to a diet. Now, without further ado, lets sink our teeth into the best commercial plans. Bon Appetit!

Do Dieters Lose Weight On The 20/20 Diet
The diet eliminates sugar and refined foods, so it will help you lose weight initially. The hardest part about the diet is sticking to the rigid choices and recipes four times a day, without going insane. The recipes in phase one are said to be very limited, and the book itself is said to be a bit wordy at times. Overall there was a good mix of people who saw nothing, or very little weight loss to those who liked the book, saw success and were pleased with the changes to their diet.

Try Intermittent Fasting For Weight Loss
Occasional fasting forces your body to tap into fat storage. You can eat your regular diet most of the time and drastically reduce your intake part of the time. The 5:2 diet is a popular intermittent fasting diet that suggests eating regularly for five days of the week and eating fewer than 500 calories for two days of the week. The 16:8 diet is similar, but you choose an eight-hour window when you can eat healthy meals and snacks while fasting the remaining 16 hours of the day.
Benefits Of Losing Weight
If youre currently overweight or obese, losing 5% or more of your body weight comes with a variety of benefits. Healthy weight loss programs emphasize lifestyle changes that help you burn fat more easily, which in turn benefits your body, mind and bank account.
Even losing just 10 to 20 pounds benefits your physical and mental health. Youll live longer by maintaining a healthy weight, which reduces the risk of depression, anxiety and certain diseases. Dieters reap even more benefits when their weight loss program emphasizes healthy habits such as getting quality sleep and drinking more water.

What Is The System 20 Plan
The doc spent a year getting the guidelines real world-ready, and his efforts paid off. Folks using just a handful of System 20 strategies are able to enjoy cocktails and cheat days while reporting hefty losses . They also improve mood, memory, energy, blood sugar, blood pressure, and much more. As Dr. Oz put it, Its been the most successful plan weve ever rolled out!
Heres what a day on System 20 looks like: You wake up and enjoy coffee with special creamer that boosts fat burn, kills appetite, and jumpstarts energy. Next, use the pep it delivers to do any fun, blood-pumping activity. Youll wait until youre hungry to eat, which means every day is going to be brunch, said Dr. Oz.
Both brunch and dinner will be a mix of nutrient-dense, fat-fighting protein, beans, and greens you can also have an optional cocktail plus low-carb snacks as needed before 7 PM, when you stop eating for the day. At night, look for little ways to relax and rejuvenate and aim to hit the hay a bit early. Its super easy, promised the doc. Its also highly effective.

Why Diets Fail
Have you tried every diet, and nothing is working? Special guest Dr. Phil McGraw joins The Doctors to offer guidance for how to get in the right mindset when it comes to eating.
The truth is you just simply have to use food for the right reason. If you use food for nutritional purposes, youre in good shape, Dr. Phil says. The problem is when you use food to celebrate, when you use food because you are lonely, you use food because you are depressed, you use food because you are happy.
Dr. Phil introduces his latest book, The 20/20 Diet, which offers a clear plan for turning your weight loss vision into reality. As he researched his book, Dr. Phil conducted a national survey to find out why people fail when dieting. He discovered that 40 percent of people who lose weight gain 100 percent of the weight back within 90 days. The No. 1 reason people say those diets usually fail? Hunger.
People on diets get hungry, and you know what? Hungry people are going to eat, Dr. Phil says. If we put you on a diet where you are hungry, youre going to eat anything that is dead or seriously slowed down.
Dr. Phil also cites boredom, cravings and lack of time and expense as reasons diets fail.
Most of the things that you are asked to do are impractical, and they are expensive, so you say, Ive got kids, Ive got a job, Ive got stuff. I cant do all of this, but Ill go by and pick something up, he says.

Metabolic Renewal is a weight loss program designed specifically for women.
The program aims to boost your metabolism by modifying your diet and exercise routine based on your specific hormone type. Yet, the science behind these claims is suspect.
Despite several downsides, it has become popular among those looking to enhance their energy levels, curb cravings, and promote overall health.
This article examines the pros and cons of Metabolic Renewal to determine whether you should give it a try.
diet review scorecard
- Nutrition quality: 3.5
- Evidence-based: 2
BOTTOM LINE: While Metabolic Renewal may promote short-term weight loss, many aspects of the plan arent backed by evidence. Additionally, its difficult to sustain long term and may lead to weight regain once you resume a normal diet.
What You Can Eat And What You Can’t
McGraw’s food plan emphasizes 20 key power foods, including: coconut oil, green tea, mustard, olive oil, almonds, apples, chickpeas, dried plums, prunes, leafy greens, lentils, peanut butter, pistachios, raisins, yogurt, eggs, cod, rye, tofu, and whey powder.
As the diet progresses, you can add things like chicken breast, tuna, oats, brown rice, carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms, cashews, blueberries, avocado, raspberries, mushrooms, potatoes, spinach, quinoa, and black beans.
You eat four meals four hours apart. Splurges are allowed twice a week as long as they dont exceed 100 calories.
You should drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily on this plan. McGraw also suggests a high-quality multiple vitamin-mineral supplement.

More Insight Into Our Methodology
One of the few truisms in weight management is that, as you may already know, dieting is definitely not a piece of cake . Furthermore, with so many options out there, looking for the right diet plan to fit your specific health or weight management goals can seem like an eternal All-You-CANNOT-Eat Buffet.
After thoroughly researching the most popular and expert-recommended diet plans, we determined that all the diet plans to be included in our “Best of” list should meet the criteria stated below. However, there is one very important factor that, though essential to a persons decision on whether or not to begin a diet, we could not review first hand: that factor is taste.
Why couldnt we review for taste? Due to freshness and food safety concerns, the three meal-delivery companies that made our cut only ship inside the continental US, meaning delivery is not available to Alaska, Hawaii, and other US territories. ConsumersAdvocate is headquartered in Dorado, Puerto Rico, which made it virtually impossible for our team to actually try the food prepared by the diet companies being reviewed. To make up for this obstacle, we read hundreds of customer and expert reviews regarding the taste of the food prepared by the companies that made our best list. We will continue trying to get the food delivered to our offices if and when that happens, we will review the meals for taste and upgrade this article accordingly.
That said, lets now take a look at our methodology:
Not Just Another Diet Book
I have to say that I was really hesitant to purchase this book, thinking it was “just another diet book”, and I certainly have enough of them! Dr Phil did all of the work with this book, right down to preparing the grocery list. It truly is a diet that you can live by, and not just go back to the old way of eating, once the weight is off. The thing that really surprised me the most about this book is that Dr Phil didn’t miss discussing one thing! He covered everything! I think he did an amazing job in every way. I am very glad I purchased this, and really looking forward to jumping in and eating the right foods for life. I read the book in 24 hours because I was so eager to learn what I have been missing on succeeding at weight loss. I feel that I now have it, to be successful this time around!

Obesity Is More Than Skin Deep
Right now, 2 out of 3 Americans are overweight or obese, and the number keeps skyrocketing year after year. Some experts consider obesity an epidemic more dangerous than that of opioids due to its role in the rise of life-threatening conditions such as diabetes, stroke, certain cancers, asthma, and osteoarthritis. Obesity is responsible for 18% of deaths among Americans over 40 years old, and 1 in 5 children in the US suffers from obesity. The medical costs for obesity-related treatments have now reached an exorbitant $150 billion per year.
May Lead To Weight Regain
Keep in mind that Metabolic Renewal is a short-term program designed to be followed for 12 weeks.
Although many short-term diets lead to rapid weight loss, youre likely to regain weight after you resume a normal diet. Thats partly because brief dietary changes dont often translate to long-term lifestyle habits .
Several core elements of Metabolic Renewal are scientifically suspect, including the concept of specific hormone types. Furthermore, the diet may lead to weight regain.
Metabolic Renewal provides a 12-week meal plan, although you can still create your own meals using the basic principles of the diet.
Heres a sample 3-day meal plan for Metabolic Renewal.

Lets Take A Closer Look At System 20
I think we should address the IF part right off the bat, because thats a huge part of System 20.
Intermittent fasting has some pretty solid research going for it, but its not for everyone, especially those with a history of eating disorders, pregnant women, or type-1 diabetics.
Combining it with a very low carb diet like System 20 does, can be super-restrictive and tough to follow. And when something is restrictive and tough to follow, people cant sustain it. Especially when its low in calories, but more on that later.
When you cant sustain a diet, you go back to where you came from. Dont worry though, Im sure Oz will have another miracle cure ready and waiting!
One of the reasons why Oz loves IF is that he claims that it improves longevity. But Instead of posting human research because there is none for IF that looks specifically at lifespan, he posts this:
started back in the 1930s when Cornell researcher Clive McKay found that rodents who consumed less calories led them to live longer, healthier lives. Since then, similar experiments of caloric restriction had shown to prolong the lifespan of worms, fleas, and even monkeys.
Worms, fleas, monkeys, and a 1930s rodent study.
Are people actually reading this stuff and thinking that a worm study proves anything about the human lifespan?!
Fu*k! I think I just sprained my eyeballs from rolling them so hard.
If you dont have the research, dont make the claim. Thats pretty easy to understand.
