2 Week Liquid Diet For Bariatric Surgery

Can I Eat Any Solid Food

While pre-op diets consist mostly of liquids during the week or two prior to surgery, youll be able to eat solids up until that point. In some cases, you may also be allowed some solids or semi-solids before your operation, but liquid intake will be more of a priority the closer to surgery you get. It will also continue for a while post-op, after which youll start to slowly phase in solids.

Some of the solid foods you might be allowed to consume are:

  • Fish
  • Watered down hot cereal, such as cream of wheat, grits, or oatmeal
  • Light yogurt

Preparing For Liquid Diets After Surgery

Another benefit of the pre-surgery liquid diet is to get used to following a liquid diet as it will also become necessary after surgery. Typically, you will need to slowly advance from a clear liquid diet composed mostly of broths, water, and sugar-free juice and gelatin to a full liquid diet that is similar to the pre-surgery diet. Making sure you have beverages on-hand and have experimented with what fluids you prefer will make this transition much smoother.

Pre Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet Overview

The Pre bariatric surgery liquid diet must get started two weeks before the surgery day. This way, you would be able to lose some significant weight while further bringing your digestive system in the right shape before the surgery process.

Now, this will be the time when you have to pay special attention to your liquid diets ingredients.

It is also highly recommended to include a variety of protein shakes in your diet to fulfill the daily protein requirements.

Reason #: Decrease Liver Size

Gastric Sleeve Diet

Reason number three is, in my opinion, the most important one. As you gained weight your liver grew with you. You get was its called a Fatty Liver.

The problem with having a large liver during bariatric surgery is that your surgeon might not be able to complete the operation.

Let me explain.

The stomach is located under the liver. During surgery, your bariatric surgeon will elevate the liver to get to the stomach so he can make it smaller so you can lose weight.

If your liver is excessively enlarged, the surgeon might not be able to get to the stomach. I saw two patients during my residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville prior to implementing the liquid diet that the surgery had to be aborted due to a large liver.

It is scientifically proven that just 2 weeks on a Low Fat, Low Carbs, High Protein, Low-Calorie diet will decrease your liver size by at least 25 percent.

So, dont take the chance. Stick to the diet and your surgery most likely will be completed as planned.

Heres What To Expect From A Liquid Diet In The Weeks Before Bariatric Surgery

So youve made the appointment for your bariatric surgery and are excited to embrace new lifestyle changes in your weight loss journey. Although WeightWise wont prescribe an all-liquid diet prior to surgery, there are occasions when it is necessary. Such as if the patient isnt at their goal weight before the procedure.

In the weeks before surgery, your surgeon will assign a liquid diet leading up to the date. Adhering to a liquid diet before bariatric surgery is critically important to the operations success and your health moving forward. Heres what you can expect from an all-liquid diet before weight loss surgery.

What Does The Pre

Two weeks before surgery, youll go on a mostly liquid diet, though some solids may be permitted depending on your situation. In general, your diet will consist of:

  • Protein shakes
  • Protein powder in low-calorie fluids>
  • Water
  • Other high-protein, low-calorie fluids and foods

The goal is to keep your calorie and carbohydrate intake to a minimum while also increasing protein. By reducing calories, youll shrink your liver, which is perhaps the most important goal here. This is because obese patients often have whats called fatty liver disease, and your surgeon will need to get around your liver to access your stomach for surgery.

Week 3 Soft Pureed Foods

Week three after gastric sleeve surgery is tough. But the good news is that you can start adding some real food into your diet, albeit pureed.

You still need to be careful to limit sugars and fats. The goals for week 3 include:

  • Get your 60 grams of protein per day
  • Eat slowly
  • Introduce new foods one by one.

Food may taste differently and will be tolerated differently than they were before surgery. You may find that dairy is harder to digest. Its recommended that you introduce new foods slowly.

Give your body some time to react to each new food. By doing this youll be able to identify foods that are causing gas, stomach upset, and/or diarrhea.

The foods listed below are typically acceptable for week three after surgery.

  • 1 protein shake per day. You can now blend them with yogurt or non-fat milk.
  • Almond milk or coconut milk makes a great protein shake.
  • Hummus
  • Scrambled eggs these are a great source of protein.
  • Soft fish. Remember to chew well.
  • Canned tuna and salmon . Great source of protein.
  • Mashed fruit. Bananas, avocados, and canned fruit .

You should avoid the following foods:

  • While smoothies are ok, limit their sugar content.
  • Sugar
  • Starchy foods like pasta, rice and bread.
  • Fibrous vegetables like celery, broccoli, asparagus, raw leafy greens.

Diet Before Your Surgery

SIMPLE Ways to LOSE Weight in Just 2 Weeks#shorts#tips#episode2#Pakistani weight loss diet plan

Losing weight before surgery helps reduce the amount of fat in and around your liver and abdomen. This may allow you to have a laparoscopy rather than open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is less invasive, requires much less recovery time, and is easier on your body.

Losing weight prior to surgery not only keeps you safer during the procedure, but it also helps train you for a new way of eating.

Your exact eating plan and pre-op weight loss goal will be determined by your healthcare provider and likely with the help of a registered dietitian.

Your eating plan may begin as soon as youre cleared for the procedure. If sufficient weight loss doesnt occur, the procedure may be postponed or canceled. For this reason, you should start the diet plan as soon as you can.

Purpose Of The Bariatric Pre

Prior to surgery, many patients will have excess fat sitting around and/or in their liver. In order to effectively reach the stomach to perform the bariatric procedure, the surgeon has to move the liver. And the larger the liver is, combined with the fat in and around it, the harder it is for the surgeon to safely and effectively maneuver around it. This can result in more time that the patient will be under anesthesia, significantly increasing their risk of complications, not to mention their medical bills. On the two-week liquid diet, patients lose enough weight to shrink the liver and limit the amount of time the surgeon will have to spend moving around the liver.

Dietary Guidelines Post Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery doesn’t eliminate dieting altogether. It means that if patients adhere to the prescribed diet for the rest of their lives, they’ll lose the excess weight and keep it off. On the contrary, if you ever go off the diet, you will gradually regain the weight lost.

Its important to start implementing this diet even before the surgery because pre-surgery weight-loss helps the surgeon by making the laparoscopic approach easier and safer and increases the likelihood that the surgery can be completed less invasively.

Other dietary requirements are basic common-sense eating. With sensible eating and exercise habits , the weight-loss can be easily maintained after surgery.

The long-term goal of weight-loss surgery is to lose approximately 55 to 75 percent of your excess weight. The end result of weight-loss surgery is that patients will continue to require only small portions of food and eventually be able to tolerate all types of foods. Patients bodies will be satisfied with smaller amounts of food and they wont have continued cravings for larger quantities of food at mealtimes.

What Liquids Should I Avoid

2 Week Liquid Diet

The most important groups of liquids to avoid during your pre-op liquid diet are carbonated and/or heavily caffeinated beverages like energy drinks. You should also stick to sugar-free beverages. Alcohol, which can also damage the liver and irritate the inner lining of the stomach, is also not permitted.

Below is a list of liquids that are best to consume during your 2-week pre-op liquid diet, although, again, each surgeon will have their own recommendations.

Recommended Pre-Op Liquids:

  • 4-5 protein shakes per day
  • Water
  • Diluted vegetable juices
  • Fiber supplements

Role Of Diet In Gastric Bypass

Before undergoing gastric bypass surgery, you must first qualify for the surgery and understand the risks and benefits involved.

Adults eligible for this surgery are typically more than 100 pounds overweight or have a body mass index over 35.

You may also be eligible if your BMI is between 30 and 35, your health is at risk due to your weight, and making lifestyle changes hasnt led to weight loss, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery .

To be a viable candidate, you should also be ready to re-learn your dietary habits. New dietary habits can help ensure the surgery has positive and lifelong effects.

Before your surgery, you need to make plans for a special diet to follow both pre- and post-surgery.

The pre-surgery diet is geared toward reducing the amount of fat in and around your liver. This reduces the risk of complications during the surgery.

After the surgery, your doctor will tailor the general diet guidelines for you. The post-surgery diet usually consists of several weekly phases. It helps you recover, meet the needs of your now smaller stomach, and gain healthier eating habits.

Reason #: Weight Loss

On the Pre Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet, most patients will lose somewhere between 10-15 pounds on average. Remember, the main reason why you are undergoing bariatric surgery is to lose weight.

The Low Carbs, Low Fat, High Protein, Low-Calorie nature of this diet will start that process for you. The more weight you lose prior to surgery the better.

Weight loss surgery in thinner patients is always easier and it has lower complication rates. So any weight loss prior to surgery is always welcome.

The amount of pounds that you will lose depends on your initial weight. The heavier you are the more weight you should lose.

It is also dependent on your sex. Male patients usually lose more weight than females. This is particularly true for older females.

Muscle is the calorie-burning machine of the body. Males, in general, have more muscle mass than females and by default, they have a higher metabolism.

Also, as you get older some of that muscle mass is lost. Older patients need to work harder to lose a significant amount of weight.

If you want to increase your success before or after bariatric surgery, exercise. That will take us to reason #2.

What Is A Gastric Sleeve

The gastric sleeve is the functional part of the stomach after gastric sleeve surgery, also called a gastrectomy. It represents about 15% of the stomachs original volume. The sleeve is separated from the rest of the organ, which plays no further role in the bodys digestive process. Its small size reduces appetite and aids in long-term weight control. Gastric sleeve surgery is permanent it cannot be reversed.

Gastric sleeve surgery is a safe and clinically proven method for reducing body weight. The procedure involves decreasing stomach size by separating the upper part of the stomach, called the fundus, from the rest of the organ. A smaller stomach means a smaller appetite. You get full quicker and are therefore less likely to overeat.

The effectiveness of gastric sleeve surgery depends a great deal on your pre-op and post-op diet. Below are some guidelines on maximizing the gains from a leading weight-loss procedure.

Physical Activity And Exercise

Its time to start exercising. Actually, you should have started on stage 2. Walking, running, biking, weight lifting, aerobics, canoeing, badminton, hiking, and dancing in your bedroom like a crazy person can all be added to your weekly routine. Ensure that you are getting at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 to 7 days a week. It doesnt matter how you do it, just do it.

Note: Do not lift more than 10 pounds for at least 6 weeks after surgery. This can put undue pressure on your internal stitches and result in a hernia.

How Much Weight Can You Lose On A 30 Day Liquid Diet

Many liquid diet regimens begin with only 400 to 800 calories per day to get you started. By substituting high-protein shakes for meals, you may eliminate unnecessary calories and fat from your diet, so aiding in weight reduction. When you restrict your caloric intake and eliminate the temptation to eat, you should expect to lose three to four pounds each week.

What Happens If I Dont Follow Pre

If you do not adhere to the pre-operative diet plan, your liver will not shrink to the point where surgery will be safe and straightforward. If you cheated, your bariatric surgeon would know about it within minutes. During surgery, the laparoscopic camera may be able to detect any food that you may have had beforehand. Its possible that the meal is still in your stomach or digestive tract.

What Is The Bariatric Surgery Diet Plan And Why Does It Matter

Pre

The bariatric surgery diet plan can be broadly categorised as follows:

What Is The Pre Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet

The Pre Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet is nothing else than a Low Carbs, Low Fat, High Protein diet mainly composed of liquids. It is recommended to keep the calorie count between 600-1200 calories per day.

For more details regarding what to eat during these 2 weeks see my previous blog post link below.

In this blog post, I will focus on the seven reasons why most bariatric surgeons around the world recommend two weeks of torture prior to surgery. Hopefully, after you finish reading the post all your questions regarding Why a liquid diet? are answered.

The seven reasons are not placed in any particular order. In my opinion, ALL are important in many different ways.

Reason #: Lean Muscle Preservation

During rapid weight loss, its almost impossible not to lose muscle mass. That is particularly true after bariatric surgery.

Malabsorption procedures like the Roux en Y Gastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch are notorious for this.

One of the main ways that bariatric surgeons try to minimize the issue is by increasing protein intake on the diet.

It starts with a liquid diet.

Remember that I said the Pre Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet is a HIGH PROTEIN DIET. Most bariatric surgeons will recommend at least 60-80 grams of protein per day. That number is related to your weight and activity level.

If you work out a lot, you will need a higher concentration of protein in your diet. Consult with your doctor and/or dietitian to see how many grams of protein you should be getting on a daily basis.

Patients with kidney and/or liver disease should be careful how much protein they intake as this can be detrimental to their condition. If you are on dialysis or have liver cirrhosis please consult with your provider before starting the Pre Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet.

Many patients, especially female patients think that in order to lose weight the need to spend countless hours on a treadmill. Cardio is definitely important but remember to alternate your workout. Lift weights several times a week to preserve and to gain muscle mass.

Work out the big muscle groups like the hamstrings and the back muscles. Use muscle confusion to your advantage by alternating between cardio and weight training.
