Ive always been able to eat whatever I want without gaining weight until now. They call it middle age spread for a reason. So I was intrigued when Jennifer Lopez laid down her 10 Day No Sugar No Carb Challenge. Her trainer reportedly told the media-savvy singer/actress that she needed to cut out carbs and sugar in preparation for her starring role as a stripper in the upcoming movie Hustlers . Rather than do it in private, she challenged the world to join her. Im a sucker for celebrity throwdowns, so I decided to participate. After all, I figured, even without a private chef or celebrity trainer to offer encouragement, how hard could the JLo Challenge be? Heres what I discovered:

Lets not get this twisted. This aint gonna be a low carb or keto meal plan where you quit grains and legumes and fruit. Were still gonna eat all those healthy foods, but heres what well be getting rid of:

    Its virtually impossible to find foods that have zero carbs. In my mind, I was eating low carb already because I rarely ate pasta, ate no rice, and Ezekiel had become my go-to bread. But I was wrong. Most fruits have sugar and carbs, and even a lot of veggies have some carbs.

    According to J-Lo and A-Rods trainer, Dodd Romero, You are to eliminate the starchy, complex carbs, like pasta, bread, rice, plus anything with sugar but you are allowed to eat vegetables. Also, eat lean protein, like turkey, fish, egg whites, chicken, and lean or grass-fed beef. I ate cheese and some egg yolks too.

    I found snacking to be a challenge since my go-to snacks include fruits. So in between meals, I snacked on nuts, seeds, celery sticks, and carrot sticks. One of my IG friends recommended pork grinds. I found them at Whole foods and they have zero carbs and zero sugar, plus 40% less fat. And let me tell you, these were a life saver because I need crunch in my diet. I even took a bag to the beach #betterthanchips.
